Slide Lecture | Robert Hammond discusses his book The High Line: The Inside Story of New York City's Park in the Sky

The High Line is among the most innovative urban reclamation projects in recent memory. The story of how it came to be is a remarkable one: two young citizens with no prior experience in planning and development collaborated with their neighbors, elected officials, artists, local business owners, and leaders of burgeoning movements in horticulture and landscape architecture to create a park celebrated worldwide as a model for creatively designed and socially vibrant, ecologically sound public space. The co-founder tells in this visual presentation the story of the project with more than 200 photographs documenting the High Line's transformation and explains how it all came to be.

Workshop | Lawn School: Hoovervilles / Spanish Language Mixer

Lawn School is a series of free classes, lectures, discussions and workshops that occur on the lawns of public parks throughout New York City. They are open to any and all to teach and attend. The goal is to facilitate an open and welcoming learning environment in a public space, provide an opportunity for those who wish to teach a course or share a skill with interested peers to do so, and engage a diverse audience who is interested in learning but otherwise may not attend public lectures or peer to peer skill share. Hoovervilles: An Architectural and Cultural Analysis of Squatter Housing in the 1930s taught by Daniel S. Palmer - The economic depression of the 1930s brought severe challenges to the American populace. Squatter housing in New York's public sites became one of the most visible manifestations of these hardships, and accordingly were given the term "Hooverville" to deride the president whose inaction allegedly caused the conditions. This talk will analyze this fascinating phenomenon through an architectural analysis of these ephemeral structures in an attempt to better understand the social implications of this economic crisis. Spanish Language Mixer taught by Christhian Diaz, Fran Gallardo, + you - According to wikipedia, about 35% of the population of New York City speaks Spanish. It is likely that you come across a Spanish speaker at least once a day! Come to this class to chat and learn Spanish for the night, or perhaps to teach it! The class is not intended to teach you specific grammar rules or to enhance your vocabulary by reading the dictionary. There will not be a teacher, but all will be teachers and guides. The Spanish language mixer invites you if you speak Spanish or English.
