Concert | Rock: Wild Flag / Misson Of Burma / Ted Leo

WILD FLAG has risen from the ashes of a number of storied bands: it’s fronted by Carrie Brownstein of Sleater-Kinney (and recently of Portlandia fame) and Mary Timony of Helium, and includes Sleater-Kinney’s Janet Weiss and The Minders’ Rebecca Cole. The band’s eponymous debut album from last year is “a glorious reminder of rock at its most exuberant,” (Chicago Tribune) and it has been tearing up the festival circuit, and every stage it takes to really, with performances that have critics waxing nostalgic about the days when rock still rocked. Meanwhile the resurgence of “post-punk legends” (Pitchfork) MISSION OF BURMA continues. With the release of its new record Unsound this July, a much-anticipated next in line to 2004’s OnOffOn, 2006’s The Obliterati, and 2009’s propulsive The Sound the Speed the Light, the band has effectively doubled the early '80s recorded output that made it a talisman for the louder faction of the last three decades of alternative and then indie music. They’ll descend on the Bandshell with a hurricane of snarling guitars and raw power. To start the night off on the right rock 'n roll foot, everyone's favorite East Coast rocker, TED LEO, will be performing a solo set.

Concert | The Power of the Trinity, a Theaterical Concert

Live global-soul music sets the backdrop for the world premiere of The Power of the Trinity, a riveting, high-energy theatrical concert about Ethiopia’s last monarch, Emperor Haile Selassie and his unbreakable determination to save the kingdom from foreign invasion. The Power of the Trinity is a play written by the late New York playwright Roland Wolf that examines the determination of one man to save a nation. King Haile Selassie (whose name translates to Power of the Holy Trinity) was the last of a 3000 year reign of monarchs in Ethiopia and is recognized as one of the first globally conscious African leaders of the 20th century. The production focuses on his leadership during Italy’s invasion of Ethiopia and Selassie’s riveting appeal for help from the League of Nations. Using songs from Tomás Doncker’s album Power of the Trinity, which was inspired by the same events, sets the tone for a production colored with multiple personalities, at times introspective at times sobering but constantly inspiring and enduring. Doncker’s brand of global soul music flecked with R&B, jazz and funk influences breathes life into the story of a king who challenged the powers that be.

Theater | Shakespeare in the Park(ing) Lot presents Coriolanus

The play is presented in a working parking lot, so you can drive there but you should expect to pay the Muni-meter. The show is offered while the lot is in use. The action sometimes happens around a parked car which drives away during a performance. At such times, the players stop and the audience moves its chairs, pausing the performance the same way a show would stop for rain uptown in Central Park. It's all part of the fun. Seats are available on a first come first serve basis, with audience members often arriving as early as 7:00 PM to secure a place. You are encouraged and welcome to bring your own chair. Once seats are gone, blankets are spread out.

Will they succeed? And what happens after "happily ever after?" A masterpiece by musical theater giants Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine, Into the Woods is a witty and irreverent reimagining of beloved classic fairytales: Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Cinderella. Featuring Amy Adams, Jack Broderick, Gideon Glick, Cooper Grodin, Ivan Hernandez, Tina Johnson, Josh Lamon, Jessie Mueller, Donna Murphy, Laura Shoop, and Tess Soltau.
