Gallery Talk | The Shipcarver’s Art: Wooden Sculpture in 19th-Century America

Speaker: Ralph Sessions, director of special projects, DC Moore Gallery, New York From about 1820 until after the Civil War, New York City was the largest shipbuilding center in the country. Its many shipyards supported a talented group of shipcarvers, most of whom had workshops on South Street in the maritime district. The carvers inspired innovations in the production and marketing of wooden figures at a time when the work was evolving from traditional art to Victorian fad. Sessions will highlight the range of wooden sculpture that New York shipcarvers and their counterparts in other East Coast cities created, including figureheads, shop and cigar store figures, garden statuary, and commemorative figures for important civic ceremonies.

A documentary by Iranian-American filmmaker, theatre artist, educator, and scholar Mahmood Karimi-Hakak. In 2009, Karimi-Hakak spent a year in Israel and Palestine, on a mission to create a theatrical collaboration with participants on both sides of the decades-old conflict in that region. What he discovered was a 760 km (472 mi) concrete Wall that currently makes any such artistic collaboration meaningless, if not impossible. Karimi-Hakak had theatre artists from each side, Palestine and Israel, express their thoughts and feelings towards The Wall, its effect on their creative work and their day-to-day life.

Yet why have we not found them? Is it really possible to achieve a level of peace and happiness that nothing or no-one can take away from us? The answers to these questions can help us realize that lasting peace cannot be found in the outer world in which we live. But can it be found within? Come learn in this illustrated presentation how the regular practice of a simple technique of spiritual meditation (explained and practiced during the session) can help us to achieve a lasting state of peace and happiness found through no outer experience.

Concert | Walker Lukens, Indie Rock Singer-Songwriter

Walker Lukens has spent 2012 on tour bringing the sounds of his Year of the Dog EP all over The United States and western Europe. Using minimal instrumentation (guitar and looped-vocals,) his songs deconstruct rock, folk and hip-hop and represent them in boldly original style. As one reviewer recently put it, YOTD is an unexpected collage of electronic fuzz, spluttering, machine gun beat box, mournfully harmonized vocal loops and primordial guitar riffs." He will be doing several new covers for the shows.
