Theater | Street Theater: Theater for the New City's 99% Reduced Fat, or, You Can Bank On Us

Theater for the New City's award-winning Street Theater Company opens its 36th annual tour with 99% Reduced Fat, or, You Can Bank On Us, a rip-roaring musical which will tour City streets, parks and playgrounds. The production will have book, lyrics and direction by Crystal Field (it's in-progress as of this writing) and musical score composed by Joseph Vernon Banks. TNC's award-winning Street Theater always contains an elaborate assemblage of trap doors, giant puppets, smoke machines, masks, original choreography and a huge (9' x 12') running screen or "cranky" providing continuous movement behind the actors. The company of 27 actors, twelve crew members, two assistant directors and five live musicians shares the challenge of performing outside and holding a large, non-captive audience. The music varies in style from Bossa Nova to Gilbert & Sullivan. Complex social issues are often presented through children's allegories, with children as the heroes, making these free productions a popular form of family entertainment.

Concert | African Sounds: Amadou & Mariam / Theophilus London / Just a Band

The world of Amadou & Mariam (pictured) is a musical sphere that stretches from the dusty streets of Mali to playing at Coachella and Lollapalooza. Their unique mix of unforgettable pop melodies and contagious rhythms, driven by Amadou’s bluesy electric guitar and the compelling interplay of their two voices may have its roots deeply planted in Africa, yet this music effortlessly transcends classification. Urban electro pop phenomenon Theophilus London released his debut LP Timez Are Weird These Days in 2011, following a series of wildly popular independent mixtapes and the Lovers Holiday EP. Timez Are Weird These Days explores the dreamlike headspace of a globetrotting young artist blurring the lines between 80’s rap, new wave beats, freestyle noise and the snarling guitars of psychobilly surf rock. London’s sound moves effortlessly through a range of emotions, from party starting dance floor defiance to moments of quiet intimacy and introspection. Just a Band is a trio from Nairobi, Kenya consisting of “Blinky Bill” Sellanga, Dan Muli and Jim Chuchu, who came together as a creative force at Kenyatta University. Describing themselves as a “super-nerdy African electronic music/art collective,” in true DIY style, they not only write, record and engineer their albums, but also create their videos, packaging and promo items. Their 2009 video for the single “Ha-He” off the album of the same name was credited as the first viral sensation to emanate from Kenya. A mix of house, neo-soul with a touch of punk throws the group into a class all its own. Before the show, join Summer Streets: play, run, walk and bike along nearly seven miles of car-free streets this August 4, 11 and 18.

Concert | Earl Scruggs Tribute with The Del McCoury Band

A generation-spanning triple bill in honor of the dearly departed Earl Scruggs led by the great DEL McCOURY. With his sons in the band, McCoury conjures an authentic high lonesome sound that prompted Dirty Linen to declare, “There’s no voice in bluegrass quite as distinct.” He has been a keeper of the flame now for decades, touring relentlessly and releasing records at a furious pace since his 1968 debut. In 2010 he received a National Heritage Fellowship lifetime achievement award from the National Endowment for the Arts, and in 2011 he was inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame. Opening honors go to the virtuosic young pair CAHALEN MORRISON & ELI WEST, a self-proclaimed “new-old time duo” from Seattle, and Brooklyn’s SPIRIT FAMILY REUNION, whose joyfully raucous, communal music “blurs the line between past and present so thoroughly, and so deftly, that time feels irrelevant." Concert | The Power of the Trinity, a Theaterical Concert

Live global-soul music sets the backdrop for the world premiere of The Power of the Trinity, a riveting, high-energy theatrical concert about Ethiopia’s last monarch, Emperor Haile Selassie and his unbreakable determination to save the kingdom from foreign invasion. The Power of the Trinity is a play written by the late New York playwright Roland Wolf that examines the determination of one man to save a nation. King Haile Selassie (whose name translates to Power of the Holy Trinity) was the last of a 3000 year reign of monarchs in Ethiopia and is recognized as one of the first globally conscious African leaders of the 20th century. The production focuses on his leadership during Italy’s invasion of Ethiopia and Selassie’s riveting appeal for help from the League of Nations. Using songs from Tomás Doncker’s album Power of the Trinity, which was inspired by the same events, sets the tone for a production colored with multiple personalities, at times introspective at times sobering but constantly inspiring and enduring. Doncker’s brand of global soul music flecked with R&B, jazz and funk influences breathes life into the story of a king who challenged the powers that be.

Theater | Shakespeare in the Park(ing) Lot presents Coriolanus

The play is presented in a working parking lot, so you can drive there but you should expect to pay the Muni-meter. The show is offered while the lot is in use. The action sometimes happens around a parked car which drives away during a performance. At such times, the players stop and the audience moves its chairs, pausing the performance the same way a show would stop for rain uptown in Central Park. It's all part of the fun. Seats are available on a first come first serve basis, with audience members often arriving as early as 7:00 PM to secure a place. You are encouraged and welcome to bring your own chair. Once seats are gone, blankets are spread out.
