Theater | Street Theater: Theater for the New City's 99% Reduced Fat, or, You Can Bank On Us

Theater for the New City's award-winning Street Theater Company opens its 36th annual tour with 99% Reduced Fat, or, You Can Bank On Us, a rip-roaring musical which will tour City streets, parks and playgrounds. The production will have book, lyrics and direction by Crystal Field (it's in-progress as of this writing) and musical score composed by Joseph Vernon Banks. TNC's award-winning Street Theater always contains an elaborate assemblage of trap doors, giant puppets, smoke machines, masks, original choreography and a huge (9' x 12') running screen or "cranky" providing continuous movement behind the actors. The company of 27 actors, twelve crew members, two assistant directors and five live musicians shares the challenge of performing outside and holding a large, non-captive audience. The music varies in style from Bossa Nova to Gilbert & Sullivan. Complex social issues are often presented through children's allegories, with children as the heroes, making these free productions a popular form of family entertainment.

Concert | American Sounds: Carolina Chocolate Drops / Buckwheat Zydeco / Abigail Washburn

In 2005, three young musicians decided to travel every Thursday night to sit in the home of legendary fiddler Joe Thompson for a musical jam session. When the three students decided to form the Carolina Chocolate Drops (pictured), they did it mostly as tribute to Thompson, performing his music in dance halls. Specializing in traditional southern music but with a modern twist, the band was an upstart in a stable of deep tradition. American musical legend Stanley “Buckwheat” Dural Jr.—along with his band, Buckwheat Zydeco—is the preeminent ambassador of Louisiana zydeco music. Over the course of 30 years, Buckwheat Zydeco has gigged with everyone from Eric Clapton to U2. If old-time music is about taking earlier, simpler music-making as one’s model, Abigail Washburn has proven herself to be a bracing revelation to that tradition. She—a singing, songwriting, clawhammer banjo player—is every bit as interested in the present and the future as she is in the past. With her newest release, City of Refuge, Washburn crosses over into something completely different than her fusion of American folk with far-flung sounds.

Dance Performance | Kùlú Mèlé African Dance & Drum Ensemble / MBDance

Kùlú Mèlé African Dance and Drum Ensemble (pictured) preserves, presents and builds upon the dance and music of Africa and the African Diaspora. Founded in 1969 by Baba Robert Crowder and inspired by the voices of Africa, the company is known for infusing African dance with urban American flair. The company has graced the stages of major venues from New York to Guinea, distinguishing itself with beautiful costumes, a thrilling percussion battery and dynamic choreography. Kùlú Mèlé boasts a rich repertoire of authentic, folkloric dance from Guinea, Nigeria, Senegal, and Cuba featuring high-energy performances that will get audiences up on their feet and dancing in the aisles. Maria Bauman founded MBDance in 2007, creating duets & small group dances from a profound sense of physical & emotional power, a desire for equity and a fascination with intimacy & relationship. Utilizing linear and circular narrative, MBDance’s work is also influenced by Bauman’s extensive study of capoeira. MBDance’s motto is “Sweat your truth!” and the choreography incorporates elements of powerful, spatial fluidity and floorwork informed by an authentic sense of self so that the work wrestles with real-life experiences such as racialized police brutality or love between women. Recently, The New York Times described MBDance’s work, Concerning Proximity as “texturally rich in its gestural language, and beautifully performed.”

Concert | Country: Lyle Lovett and His Acoustic Group / Aoife O'Donovan

LYLE LOVETT’s wry wit and omnivorous musical palate embrace everything from country and folk to big-band swing and traditional pop, and his live performances feel “like the best kind of soul-stirring church service, full of joy, solemnity, reverence, and contemplation (Boston Globe)—a fitting way to wrap up the season. The night begins with transplanted Brooklynite AOIFE O’DONOVAN, well known as the leader of the revered bluegrass band Crooked Still and an in-demand collaborator with the likes of Chris Thile and Yo-Yo Ma. She’s here with her country-folk leaning solo project; if the style has shifted, her angelic voice is as heartbreakingly pure as ever.

The play is presented in a working parking lot, so you can drive there but you should expect to pay the Muni-meter. The show is offered while the lot is in use. The action sometimes happens around a parked car which drives away during a performance. At such times, the players stop and the audience moves its chairs, pausing the performance the same way a show would stop for rain uptown in Central Park. It's all part of the fun. Seats are available on a first come first serve basis, with audience members often arriving as early as 7:00 PM to secure a place. You are encouraged and welcome to bring your own chair. Theater | Stephen Sondheim & James Lapine's Into the Woods, the Broadway Smash

A witch's curse condemns the Baker and his Wife to a life without children. Will they succeed? And what happens after "happily ever after?" A masterpiece by musical theater giants Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine, Into the Woods is a witty and irreverent reimagining of beloved classic fairytales: Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Cinderella. Featuring Amy Adams, Jack Broderick, Gideon Glick, Cooper Grodin, Ivan Hernandez, Tina Johnson, Josh Lamon, Jessie Mueller, Donna Murphy, Laura Shoop, and Tess Soltau.
