Concert | Celebration of Afro-Brazilian Choro Music

Meet up with the New York-based Brazilian choro and samba ensemble Regional Samaúma for a celebration of the sounds of Brazil through the potent group music-making gathering known as a Roda de Choro! Choro references a rich repertoire that dates back nearly two centuries and represents the fusion of Afro-Brazilian traditions with classical sonorities and dance forms from European culture. Initially developed in the post-slavery Rio de Janeiro in the late 1800s, choro remains a fundamental driving force for the contemporary expression of Brazilian culture. For this event, Regional Samaúma presents a two-part Roda de Choro, beginning with a historical journey across 150 years of choro styles, incorporating maxixe, Brazilian polka and tango, samba, lundu, and baião. In the second part, they invite the audience to participate in a semi-improvisational performance. Bring your own instrument and join in the fun with a few choro tunes! 5:00–6:00 pm: Presentation of choro music by Regional Samaúma 6:00–6:30 pm: Participatory Roda de Choro Seating is first-come first-served.
