City Walk | Half-Smiler Walk with Artist Helen Mirra

Helen Mirra’s (b. 1970, United States) artistic practice is contingent on the activity of walking. She proposes a series of morning walks open to everyone, cultivating the half-smile. Mirra begins the half-smiler walks by introducing the concept of equanimity as described in early Buddhist philosophy, and corresponding ideas about the everyday, somatics, and friendliness. After a brief orientation, participants will set out for a few hours, walking separately in space while together in time, and then meet again for convivial lunch. October 3–7 and 10–14, 2016.

Conference | The Future of Scholarly Knowledge

In the mid-20th century when pure science needed no defense, the Ivory Tower metaphor celebrated the university as a site protected from political interference, commercial pressures and short-term problem solving. The scholarly knowledge generated there, and at similar institutions and academies, depended heavily on public funding, private philanthropy, and university donors. Today, Webster tells us, the Ivory Tower is “an impractical, often escapist attitude marked by aloof lack of concern with or interest in practical matters or urgent problems... where people make and discuss theories about problems...without having any experience with those problems.” If universities claim beneficial consequences as justification for government funds, why shouldn’t they be asked for evidence of these consequences? If we urge evidence-based policy -- why not, then, evidence-based accountability using cost-benefit analysis to determine whether the NSF, NIH, NEA, or NEH merit taxpayer funds?

Talk | Costly Conversations: Obstacles to Peace Talks in Asian Wars, 1950-1975

Diplomacy plays a critical role in the management and resolution of armed conflict and crises in the international system. After a war breaks out, decision makers see the opening of talks as a constructive step in the conflict’s resolution - dialogue allows for deals to be brokered and the logistics of war termination to be coordinated among all the relevant parties. However, leaders often refuse to engage in talks with their opponent during an armed conflict, creating obstacles to peace. This project adds a framework of the potential costs of conversation to the existing literature on the benefits of diplomacy to better explain variation in countries’ approaches to wartime diplomacy. Speaker Oriana Skylar Mastro is an assistant professor of security studies at the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University where her research focuses on Chinese military and security policy,

Staged Reading | Dress of Fire: From the Trojan War to the Presidential Campaign

Dress of Fire is based on the Trojan War but has very important overtones that make it pertinent in view of the current world situation. The drama, written by Nina Kethevan, was presented this past June at the Dorothy Strelsin Theater. Dress of Fire is a fast moving theater piece that explores the psyches of the major characters of the Trojan War while offering a subtle subtext regarding the current world’s crumbling society. For the past 18 months or so, Americans and people all over the globe, have been drawn into our surreal presidential election campaign where candidates regard themselves as emperors above the law.

Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all. Tours are Mondays and Fridays at 2pm, and Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10am.

Rockefeller Center is one of the most popular public spaces and tourist attractions in New York City. This depression-era commercial complex takes up over three full city blocks and is rich with history, public art, and art-deco architecture. Built by business mogul John D. Rockefeller Jr. with his own money, he instructed his team of designers and architects to build the most beautiful commercial complex of it’s kind in the world. That vision resulted in what is still one of NYC’s greatest treasures and gave rise to some of NYC’s favorite traditions including the Radio City Christmas Spectacular featuring the famous dance team the Rockettes and the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree.

Talk | Eyes of the Entrepreneurs with Bill Stafford, Independent Music Publisher

A music publisher (or publishing company) is responsible for ensuring the songwriters and composers receive payment when their compositions are used commercially. The copyrights owned and administered by publishing companies are one of the most important forms of intellectual property in the music industry. Publishing companies play a central role in managing this vital asset. Although publishing is one of the most important financial aspects of a musician's career, it is a complex field and artists often overlook this aspect of their professional life, or find it hard to get straight answers to common publishing issues in the complicated and ever-evolving era of streaming services and digital broadcasting. Music publisher Bill Stafford, founder of Missing Link Music, will join the School of Jazz this week to discuss the basics of publishing, including how to register your compositions and recordings, understanding what a publisher does, outlining the various types of royalties, and how money is actually made and paid throughout the industry.

This conference brings together scholars from various fields to examine in an interdisciplinary discussion the meaning of individuality and individual liberty in today’s society.

Lecture | Race and the Invention of the Greek Profile: From Winckelmann to Warhol

We owe to Winckelmann the invention of the Griechische Profil which he assumed to be “as peculiar to the ancient Greeks, as flat noses and little eyes to the Calmuks and Chinese.” This Greek profile rapidly became an obsessional leitmotiv in his inquiry into compared virtues of populations and their arts throughout Antiquity. Later, the Greek profile became an essential anthropological operator: even more than a division between Man and animals, it established sharing between the mere nature and the highest degree of human culture. The presentation will explore the fate of this ambivalent paradigm, constantly waving between fiction of art and human reality. Lecturer Éric Michaud is directeur d’études at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales, Paris, where he has been a faculty member since 1998.
