City Walk | Half-Smiler Walk with Artist Helen Mirra

Helen Mirra’s (b. 1970, United States) artistic practice is contingent on the activity of walking. She proposes a series of morning walks open to everyone, cultivating the half-smile. Mirra begins the half-smiler walks by introducing the concept of equanimity as described in early Buddhist philosophy, and corresponding ideas about the everyday, somatics, and friendliness. After a brief orientation, participants will set out for a few hours, walking separately in space while together in time, and then meet again for convivial lunch. October 3–7 and 10–14, 2016.

Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all. Tours are Mondays and Fridays at 2pm, and Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10am.

Book Signing | Richard Greenberg signs copies of his book Rules for Others to Live By

Tony Award-winning playwright Richard Greenberg is something of a hermit, but it seems to be working out for him. When you spend so much of your time inside making up stories about fictional characters, he says, it sharpens your sensitivity to what goes on when you're outside interacting with reality--and all of the bizarre, unpredictable, and even unimaginable people beyond one's front door. In Rules for Others to Live By, Greenberg shares stories from his life, observations from two decades of residence on a three-block stretch of New York City, and musings from his brilliant, if not a little unusual, mind. Spanning a range of conversational topics from friendship to writing, urban life to visiting parents, health crises to hypochondria and other paranoid tendencies, Greenberg's distinct and hilarious voice articulates our own mild obsessions and the idiosyncrasies we can only hope will go unnoticed in a crowd.

Tour | High Line Tour

The area around the High Line Park was a vital business district of New York City, supplying fresh fruits, French Cheeses and Russian caviar as well as fresh meats to City markets. The hustle and bustle of the streets induced the City to elevate the railroad trains delivering goods to the commercial buildings. When interstate truck traffic made the railway outdated, it fell into ruin, only to be regenerated as a park. The tour is every Monday.

Yet some accused Shirley Clarke of exploitation, as she and her partner Carl Lee, a brilliant African American actor and heroin user, hint as a love triangle between the three of them, as they goad Jason into a terrible on-screen nervous breakdown. 79 min. Author Reading | Maja Haderlap reads from her book Angel of Oblivion

Angel of Oblivion is based on the experiences of her family and the Slovenian-speaking minority in southern Austria, many of whom fought as partisans against the Nazis during the Second World War. The story centers on the experiences of a young girl learning to navigate the terrain between two hostile communities and two extremely burdened languages: Slovenian, a language of heroic resistance and continued humiliation, and German, an escape from her stifling rural upbringing but also the language of the camps which her grandmother barely survived and many other family members didn’t. Engaging with themes of tolerance and integration of minority communities, the burden of history, the effects of conflicts on survivors and their children, and language’s role in shaping identity, Haderlap’s novel strikes at problems of paramount importance to our world today.

Author Reading | Christophe Boltanski discusses his novel La Cache

La Cache tells the story of an exceptional family, among its members Christian Boltanski–one of France’s most important contemporary artists– and Luc Boltanski, director of research at the prestigious EHESS and the inventor of “pragmatic sociology.” The Boltanskis nourish themselves as if they are one body: at the restaurant, they share a three-course meal between the four of them. Luc and Christian, the children, don’t go to school. They never celebrate birthdays and the passing of time is never referenced. They all travel together in a Fiat 500, a yogurt cup-shaped car with no doors or back windows. When vacationing, they sleep on top of each other in the car.
