Author Reading | Poets Read: Jorie Graham / Robyn Schiff

Jorie Graham’s most recent book is From the New World: Poems 1976-2014. She “thinks of the poet not as a recorder but as a constructor of experience. Like Rilke or Yeats, she imagines the hermetic poet as a public figure, someone who addresses the most urgent philosophical and political issues of the time” (James Longenbach). Her many honors include a MacArthur Fellowship. She teaches at Harvard University. Robyn Schiff is the author of three books of poetry, including A Woman of Property. “Schiff’s is a major species of weird, glowing genius...her brilliance is singular, her vision compound. We’ll be measuring this work’s radiance in light-years” (Brenda Shaughnessy). She teaches at the University of Iowa. Event is free and open to the public.

Book Discussion | Sarah Schulman reads from her book Conflict is Not Abuse

Sarah Schulman writes both novels, such as her recent "The Cosmopolitans," and non-fiction philosophy, as presented in her newest book "Conflict is Not Abuse: Overstating Harm, Community Responsibility, and the Duty of Repair." In "Conflict is Not Abuse," Schulman observes that inflated accusations of harm are now being used to avoid accountability. This occurs at all levels, from intimate relationships to global politics. Illuminating the difference between "conflict" and "abuse," she addresses our contemporary culture of scapegoating. This bold work reveals how punishment replaces personal and collective self-criticism, and shows why difference is so often used to justify cruelty and shunning.

Discussion | The Zine Project: Allied Productions

A conversation with Allied Productions on the second and final evening of their zine residency. Founded in 1980 by Jack Waters and Peter Cramer, Allied Productions helped give a start to pioneering non-profits like ABC No Rio on the Lower East Side in 1983. Recently, Allied Productions’ main project has been the development and maintenance of Le Petit Versailles Community Garden, a formerly abandoned lot in the East Village, which has been home to art exhibitions, performances, readings, and film screenings. In trying to “fill out the gap” left by deaths from AIDS, the zine, as a handmade, grassroots object, will serve as a central metaphor for addressing the ephemeral, fragmentary, and affective documents of a generation of artists. Two artist collectives, Allied Productions (October 18) and AUNTS (November 8) will develop zines and related live presentations addressing how each collective’s artistic practices might be in conversation with the reality and aftermath of the AIDS epidemic in the NYC dance and performance community.

Reading | Psychotherapist Viktor Frankl: Nevertheless, Say 'Yes' to Life

In the 1920s, Viktor Frankl (1905-1997) founded the "Third Viennese School of Psychotherapy", the so-called logotherapy or existential analysis. In his approach to therapy he focused on meaning and value. Having survived the Holocaust as the only one of his immediate family, Frankl reflected upon his experiences in the concentration camps in his famous book Man's search for Meaning which has become one of the ten most influential books in the United States. Lesser known is his play Synchronization in Birkenwald: A Metaphysical Conference, which he wrote in 1946. On the occasion of Frankl's 85th birthday in 1990, Gregorij von Leitis, Founding Artistic Director of Elysium, presented the world premiere of this play in New York. Soon after the Holocaust, Frankl advocated for reconciliation as the only way out of the destructive catastrophe of war. The experience of meaning even while suffering, and reconciliation with oneself and with the world as a precondition for healing the world and society: those aspects of Frankl's work are more important than ever in today's broken world. PROGRAM Gregorij von Leitis will read Frankl's texts. Michael Lahr will introduce Frankl's life and work and his continuing relevance.
