Author Reading | Sara Goldrick-Rab discusses her book Paying the Price: College Costs, Financial Aid, and the Betrayal of the American Dream

Sara Goldrick-Rab’s singular mission is to identify novel approaches to making higher education the accessible and affordable place that American families want and need it to be. She is recognized as one of the architects of President Obama’s free college proposal, America’s College Promise, and has helped craft state and federal legislation to lower the price of college across the country. In Paying the Price, Goldrick-Rab proves in damning detail why the assumption that if a young person works hard enough, they’ll be able to get a college degree and be on the path to a good life is painfully untrue today. Quite simply, college is currently far too expensive for many people, and the confusing mix of federal, state, institutional, and private financial aid leaves countless students without the resources they need to pay for it. Drawing on an unprecedented study of 3,000 young adults who entered public colleges and universities in Wisconsin in 2008 with the support of federal aid and Pell Grants, Goldrick-Rab reveals the devastating effect of these shortfalls. She doesn’t merely identify the problem and its causes, she also lays out a number of possible solutions, including a public sector-focused “first degree free” program.

Opening Reception | 118 Years of Colonialism: Exhibition on Puerto Rican Protest

MA Curatorial Practice presents an exhibition of work that addresses the current spirit of protest in Puerto Rico and the unsustainable political and economic relationship between the country and the United States. The work in the exhibition calls attention to the ongoing suppression of Puerto Rican sovereignty by American force and legislation, which claims to offer stability while collapsing any sense of the commonwealth’s independent identity. Participating artists include Christopher Gregory, Karlo Andrei Ibarra, Rafael Miranda Mattei, Beatriz Santiago Muñoz and Mónica Rodríguez.

Opening Reception | NOOL: Paintings by Eric Helvie

Helvie’s partially photorealistic oil painting, Pipe Smoker (Cyclops), greets viewers with two enthusiastic thumbs up, its overwhelming optimism clashing with its own distorted predicament. The horned, fleshy, pipe smoking mass seems to say, “cool", but everything is clearly, "not cool." Things are only as good as they can be when you're the lovechild of a horror film and an emoji. Other works included in the exhibition, such as Nool, Cave Ghost, and Peter, are layered in both visual reference and textured material. Thick oil paint and bubbling scales are veiled by richly pigmented scraps of fleece which were aggressively cut from pink, purple, and green Snuggies. The paintings are rich, striking, and intriguingly cryptic.

Author Reading | Ciara Torres-Spelliscy discusses her book Corporate Citizen? An Argument for the Separation of Corporation and State

The 2016 presidential election has spurred debate about the role of corporate money in politics. Over time, corporations have engaged in an aggressive campaign to dramatically enlarge their political and commercial speech and religious rights through strategic litigation and extensive lobbying. At the same time, many large firms have sought to limit their social responsibilities. What role does this play in our current political system? Ciara Torres-Spelliscy, corporate lawyer turned election law scholar, will explore this resistance and offer reforms to support these new understandings of the corporation in contemporary society. She’ll be joined by Alyssa Katz, member of the New York Daily News editorial board and author of The Influence Machine: The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Corporate Capture of American Life.

Opening Reception | Exhibition: Achilles and Other Paintings by Mark Zimmerman

Mark Zimmermann's work is based on the fusion of meditative fields, architectonic structures and an organic gestural line that is one-part intentional and one-part accidental. Zimmermann clearly demonstrates his deftness of hand though labored bands of color, building and editing one band upon other, until the editing process renders compositions that combine both hard-edge and action-painting abstraction.

Performance | Fourth Annual Cicero Speech Contest

Susan B. Anthony famously wrote, “No advanced step taken by women has been so bitterly contested as that of speaking in public. For nothing which they have attempted, not even to secure the suffrage, have they been so abused, condemned, and antagonized.” More than 150 years later, women are still vastly outnumbered by men when it comes to speaking in the public sphere to influence people, policies, and events. This fourth annual event brings the college’s best public speakers together for a lively competition in two categories: persuasive advocacy speech and impromptu speech. Come to be persuaded, to be entertained, and to meet promising young voices as they debate the topics that matter most.

Opening Reception | Hugh Scott-Douglas' Trade Winds: Printed Canvases

A new series of UV cured inkjet and resin printed canvases and a recent digital video work. Scott-Douglas works from a studio space in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, an urban industrial park with a long varied history of changing roles ranging from naval shipyard to film studio lot. Reflecting on this environment, he began researching the global shipping trade and found a mapping software able to track all thoroughfare of sea transport. Utilizing the capabilities of the program in a manner different from the software's intent, Scott-Douglas isolates the environmental conditions in each location - which appear as real-time graphemes of lines, arrows, and triangles - by removing all of the boats from the water. Specific to current, wind, and wave directions, these symbols are mapping the shifting conditions of the various trade routes, and become the basis of his artworks in layers of printed ink and resin.

Lecture | Non-Ideal Philosophy of Language

Jason Stanley, Professor of Philosophy at Yale University, gives this lecture. Science requires idealizations. Physicists, for example, often work with ideal models of reality that abstract from the existence of friction. The theory of meaning, both in philosophy and linguistics, is no different. Virtually all work in the theory of meaning presupposes an idealized model, which Stanley calls the standard model, in which various idealizations have been made to focus on attention on the putatively most central aspects of linguistic communication. In this talk, part of co-authored work with the linguist David Beaver, Stanley isolates five idealizations that are made by the vast majority of work in the theory of meaning, and argues that these idealizations are scientifically problematic and politically flawed. Stanley uses the critique of the standard model to sketch a new program for the theory of meaning, one that places at the center of inquiry into linguistic communication precisely the features of communication that the idealizations of the standard model seem to almost deliberately occlude.

Book Signing | Photographer Slim Aarons signs copies of his book Women

As a chronicler of the good life, as lived by the upper classes and aristocracy in the 1950's, 60's, and 70's, Slim Aarons has no peer. Born in New Hampshire in the early years of the century, he was a classic outsider looking in, and as such he idealized the rich. The women are beautiful and exquisitely dressed, the men handsome and poised. The houses, shown in detail, range from European palazzos and castles to Palm Beach to suburban and Southhampton castles.

Talk | Artist Talk: Bruno Boudjelal

The scale of African and Arab migration to Europe has reached unprecedented levels. Never before has the journey across the Mediterranean been more dangerous or more documented. Stretched between two continents and two cultures, the work of the artist Bruno Boudjelal—a Frenchman of Algerian origin—inhabits these distances. Boudjelal has a unique photographic language, one concerned with the fleeting and intimate moment. It lends his photographs an illegitimate quality, as though they were extracted against the wishes of history. During this, his first visit to the United States, Boudjelal joins us to discuss his work, including his most recent book, Frantz Fanon, in which he responds to the life and ideas of the Martinique-born French-Algerian thinker.

Talk | Loving Yourself Is the Solution

No matter what your problem is, loving yourself is the solution. It is the basis for living the life you want. If you want more happiness, more health, more abundance or more love, just love yourself more. If you are frustrated, confused, stuck, or you feel unlovable, don't think that it is impossible to create the life you want; don't keep accepting the way things are, or trying to hide your dissatisfaction. Allow me to help you understand what self-love is and how to love yourself unconditionally. You will discover the key to living with ease, passionately, authentically and to being joyful.
