Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all. Tours are Mondays and Fridays at 2pm, and Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10am.

Discussion | Religion and the Vote: The Role of Faith in Modern American Elections

Religion influences American political and public life in a huge variety of ways, shaping foreign policy, economics, and social issues. We seek to understand how religion impacts the way in which candidates for political office engage these issues. Polls show that, in general, religious Americans are more likely to vote Republican and less-religious or secular Americans tend to vote Democratic; however, the role of religion in government is much more complicated and nuanced than this simple binary. To what extent does religiosity impact party identification? How does it affect the way candidates seek office, and how does it affect voters’ choices? Panelists will include: Anthea Butler, University of Pennsylvania Robert P. Jones, PRRI, Author of The End of White Christian America Sarah Posner, Journalist, Author of God’s Profits: Faith, Fraud, and the Republican Crusade for Values Voters Kenneth Wald, University of Florida Fred Harris (moderator), Columbia University

Tour | High Line Tour

The area around the High Line Park was a vital business district of New York City, supplying fresh fruits, French Cheeses and Russian caviar as well as fresh meats to City markets. The hustle and bustle of the streets induced the City to elevate the railroad trains delivering goods to the commercial buildings. When interstate truck traffic made the railway outdated, it fell into ruin, only to be regenerated as a park. The tour is every Monday.

Lecture | Leitmotif Siegfried: Understanding Schizophrenia

In his lecture, Laurence A. Rickels reenters the exchange between Walter Benjamin and Alexander Mette, which led to Mette’s review of Ursprung des deutschen Trauerspiels in Imago and brought Benjamin to consider the clinical picture of schizophrenia, the topic of Mette’s dissertation-book, which he in turn reviewed. While this contact underscores Benjamin’s interest in the clinical picture of psychosis, which Rickels sees as fundamental to Benjamin’s understanding of the melancholic mode of allegory, Rickels’ emphasis this time lies on the research Mette pursued as bona fide psychoanalyst in Nazi Berlin.
