Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all. Tours are Mondays and Fridays at 2pm, and Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10am.

Lecture | Vulnerability and Clientelism

With Simeon Nichter, Associate Professor at the University of California, San Diego. Citizens’ vulnerability to negative shocks heightens their willingness to engage in clientelism, a phenomenon with important implications for democratic accountability and responsiveness. We use a randomized control trial in Northeast Brazil to show that reduced vulnerability decreases requests for private benefits, especially among citizens more likely to engage in clientelist relationships with local politicians. We also show that reduced vulnerability undermines the electoral performance of incumbent mayors during their re-election campaigns. Evidence points to the persistence of treatment effects, given that findings are observed not only during the election campaign, but also a full year later.

With a width of 7.6 meters and a depth of 25 meters, the 24-story tower with its symmetrical glass façade, Abraham succeeded in producing extraordinary stylistic elements that elude any architectural trend. Lecture | 'Scatter’d Men': Mutilated Bodies and Militant Nostalgia in Shakespeare’s Henry V

Henry V is one of William Shakespeare’s most war-oriented English history plays. It is obsessed with broken bodies, memory and the question of what will be remembered after a war ends. In his famous St. Crispin’s Day speech before the battle of Agincourt, the king imagines a returned soldier, now old, celebrating the victory at a future feast. But the soldier Williams has another vision of the future. In Act 4, he speaks of a soldierly ghost that will rise up on the Day of Judgment: a thing made out of the body parts of men who died in battle. Both of these moments look to the future—or to the moment the play is performed—and to the kinds of memories that Agincourt will produce, but they envision memory in vastly different terms. Can Agincourt produce memorials that will celebrate conquest and victory? Will these soldiers be remembered? Or will they simply rot in French soil? This talk is by Frederick Lewis Allen Room researcher-in-residence Susan Harlan. This talk is part of Harlan’s book Memories of War in Early Modern England: Armor and Militant Nostalgia in Marlowe, Sidney, and Shakespeare(Palgrave Macmillan, 2016).

Lecture | Anthropology as Cosmic Diplomacy: Toward an Ecological Ethics for the Anthropocene

Eduardo Kohn, Associate Professor of Anthropology at McGill University delivers this lecture. Kohn's research is concerned with human-animal relations and the implications that the ethnographic study of these can have for rethinking anthropology. The empirical context for this work is his ongoing long-term research on how the Quichua (Quechua) speaking Runa of Ecuador’s Upper Amazon inhabit the tropical forest and engage with its beings. Analytical frameworks that fashion their tools from what is unique to humans (language, culture, society, and history) or, alternatively, what humans are commonly supposed to share with animals are inadequate to the task of understanding these sorts of engagements in a way that is both faithful to the multiple species involved and to the historical context of their interaction. By contrast, Kohn turns to an embodied and emergentist understanding of semiosis—one that treats sign processes as inherent to life and not just restricted to humans—as well as to an appreciation for the many sorts of pattern-generating processes that mediate our relations to the world and to the other beings that inhabit it. In the process, he hopes to move anthropology beyond “the human,” both as analytic and as bounded object of study.

Lecture | Gender and Migration in France and the U.S.

Gender is both cause and effect in migration. The gender roles of immigrants have been constructed by states, labor markets, and the migrating communities themselves. Historian Nancy Green looks at this phenomenon in the U.S. and France—two countries that have seen a major influx of migrants from all over the world over the last two centuries—to explore how male and female gendered migration roles have been perceived and enacted by state, society, individuals, and historians. Nancy Green is professor of history at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris.

Lecture | How to Think Like a Humanist About Information

The methods and practices of the humanities and humanistic social science disciplines have the power to transform our understanding of information and computation, while computational methods and quantitative approaches now offer new paths for inquiry in these disciplines. In this lecture, Rachel Sagner Buurma, Associate Professor in the Department of English Literature, Swarthmore College, will show how. Examples drawn from work at the intersection of information science and humanistic text-based study will act as touchstones for a series of key questions in this emerging area.

Although France is confronted with similar problems, the victims of French police brutality have not benefited from the same media attention. Not Your Mama’s Movement explores the similarities and differences between the racial situations in the U.S. and France and how today’s activists navigate building movements for change. Discussion | Making Scents: Perfume and Culture

Come meet Anastasia Sokolow, Carlos Huber, and Maria McElroy for a roundtable discussion on cultural, historical and personal approaches to fragrance design. About the speakers: Anastasia Sokolow trained at the prestigious Higher International Institute of Perfume, Cosmetics, and Food Flavouring outside of Versailles. She is the brand owner and fragrance designer for Sulékó, a niche perfume brand continuing the tradition of Russian Haute Parfumerie through personal fragrances inspired by Russian literature, culture, painting, music, and folklore. A trained architect and historical preservationist with experience in luxury retail, Carlos Huber launched Arquiste in 2011 with the intent to recapture the past through olfactive notes. All ten fragrances in the Arquiste line are meant to transport the wearer back to important moments in history through scent. American artist and perfumer Maria McElroy launched Aroma M in 1995 following extensive training to become a certified aromatherapist, and seven more years in Japan learning about kodo (the ancient art of fragrance), ikebana (floral arrangement), koto, Shiatsu massage, and Zen Buddhism. Since its launch at Bergdorf Goodman and Harrods, the Aroma M Geisha line has become known world-wide for the quality of its fragrances, and unique the way in which McElroy interprets her experiences as scent.
