Other | Marie Lorenz's Tide and Current Taxi: Boat Rides on the Hudson

Marie Lorenz (b. 1973, United States) is a New York-based artist whose practice involves using the tide to navigate the waterways of New York City in wooden boats she builds by hand. For her ongoing project, titled Tide and Current Taxi, the artist takes a variety of participants on boat trips exploring the shorelines of the city. For the High Line, Lorenz installs three rowboats on the underside of the park at Gansevoort Plaza, which the artist periodically lowers, in order to take visitors on boat rides on the Hudson River. This program is part of Wanderlust, a group exhibition that explores the themes of walking, journeys, and pilgrimages. Start times: 7am, 8am, 9am, 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 2pm.

Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all. Tours are Mondays and Fridays at 2pm, and Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10am.

Symposium | Life and Death on the New York Dance Floor, 1980 to 1983

This day-long symposium is devoted to an era of NYC’s downtown music that barely earned itself a name, but whose protagonists – feeding dub, hip hop, new wave, no wave, orchestral music and rock feeding into the post-disco mix – created one of the most creative and dynamic periods in New York’s music history. Its backdrop is the rise of Ronald Reagan, real estate inflation, and, perhaps most of all, AIDS wreaking havoc on the city’s overlapping art and dance scenes. Soon music majors returned to dance with a vengeance (re-injecting it with a commercial edge that contributed little in the way of artistic innovation). The crack epidemic besieged the city’s poorest communities so that the conditions no longer existed for disparate groups to explore commonalities. The glorious reign of mutant exploration started to close down, though its creative and communal example would inspire future generations. Featuring Tim Lawrence (University of East London), Bernie Gendron (music historian), Leonard Abrams (East Village Eye), Patti Astor (downtown actor, Fun Gallery, Wild Style),Johnny Dynell (Mudd Club, Pyramid, Danceteria, Area), Steven Harvey (New York Rocker), Danny Krivit (Roxy), Sal Principato (Liquid Liquid), John Robie (musician, producer), Sharon White (The Saint), Pat Ivers & Emily Armstrong (Nightclubbing), Kit Fitzgerald (video artist), Marvin Taylor(NYU), Jeffrey Deitch (gallerist), Michael Holman (Canal Zone, Gray, Negril, breaking impresario), Chi Chi Valenti (Mudd Club, Danceteria), Michael Zilkha (ZE Records), & Sukhdev Sandhu (NYU)

Workshop | Meditation: A Day of Mindfulness

There will be an emphasis on mindfulness (a focus on now) with some interest in meditation (a focus on breath.) Mindfulness meditation opens a door to greater appreciation of life in the moment. The day will include 20 minute periods for practicing breath meditation, walking meditation, learning to focus on the present through the body, mindfulness of sound, and many other aspects of mindfulness. The emphasis is on learning to be present for two really different reasons. One, in order to experience life more richly. And two, because when we’re focused on the present a miracle occurs: we can’t ruminate about the past or worry about the future. All will be explained so that the beginner is comfortable. Experienced meditators will also be interested, because this mindfulness-based approach to meditation has a strong emphasis on developing self-compassion through the quality with which we relate to ourselves as we encounter imperfection.

Workshop | How Do You Want to Die?: A Workshop and Performance

We dream and scheme and plan almost every aspect of our lives: linked Google calendars, Facebook event schedule reminders, FitBit steps and Apple bedtime apps, etc. For some Americans almost every bodily function and logistical aspect of their day is timed, dated, and reminded. We plan our careers and dreams of retirement, we schedule when we will have our babiesㅡsometimes even down to the hour with the option of scheduled cesareans. We plan getaway vacations, timed and crunched in between the rest of life. We will plan almost anything, except for our deaths. This evening they will focus on the questions we all too often fail to ask one another, like: how do you want to die? Saralee Gallien and Roxanne Baker will discuss their work as death doulas and care practitioners within our death-phobic culture. In this workshop, participants will be encouraged to record their death fantasies and fill out advanced directives. Gallien and Baker are dear friends and co-conspirators living in Durham, North Carolina. This fall marks their sixth year of collaborating to build a life that acknowledges all the joy and suffering of being alive, and with that embracing the imminence and mystery of death. From our proximity to death in hospitals, hospice, and homes as caretakers and future nurses, our hope in sharing this work is to break down fear and alienation that causes us to deny the presence of death in our society.
