Talk | Macedonia: Ten Years of Power-Sharing

A presentation by David L. Phillips, Director of the Program on Peace-building and Rights. Remarks by H.E. Zoran Jolevski, Ambassador of Macedonia to the United States. The Ohrid Framework Agreement was finalized on Aug. 13, 2001. It ended a conflict between Macedonians and ethnic Albanians by setting up a power-sharing arrangement among communities in Macedonia that guaranteed greater Albanian participation in governance, including constitutional reforms. The Agreement also provided for greater Albanian economic and cultural rights. While the agreement succeeded in mitigating conflict in Macedonia, signatories expected that NATO and European Union membership would resolve the country's deeply rooted problems. However, their aspirations remain in limbo because of the ongoing name dispute with Greece and the continuing dominance of identity politics, which is divisive and contributes to fragmentation in society.

Talk | Artist Leigh Ledare discusses his work

Leigh Ledare uses photography, archival material, texts, and social taboos to interrogate human subjectivity, desire, and the photographic image in turn. His book, Pretend You’re Actually Alive, explores his relationship with his mother, who made tactical use of an explicit sexuality toward her multiple economic, personal, and psychological ends. His recent work, Double Bind, is comprised of collages of memorabilia, found images, and photographs of the artist's ex-wife taken by Ledare and by her new husband, each picturing their shared subject in sometimes tender, sometimes graphic poses that register the boundaries of their respective relationships.

Talk | “Brother, Can You Paradigm?” Language Play, Intelligence and Literacy

Wordplay enthusiast Don Hauptman rises to challenge the canard that puns are a “low” form of humor. In his presentation, he will demonstrate—with amusing examples and fascinating visuals—that the best wordplay is literate, sophisticated, and cerebral. The field of recreational linguistics boasts vast numbers of aficionados who are captivated by “the mischief of language.” An appreciation for punning correlates with education and intelligence. Some well-known geniuses are addicts. Wordplay may be an effective weapon against illiteracy. And could it even create positive social and political change? Bring your sense of humor to this unique presentation. By the end, you may find yourself cheering: “Kitschy coup!”

Book Discussion | A Discussion of Dwight Macdonald's Masscult and Midcult: Essays Against the American Grain

A conversation between John Summers and James Wolcott. Political radical, trenchant essayist, and impresario of the New York Intellectuals, Dwight Macdonald was one of the towering figures of twentieth-century American letters. In his most famous and controversial essay, "Masscult and Midcult," Macdonald turns his formidable critical attention to what he sees as a new, and potentially catastrophic, development in the history of Western civilization: the influence-by turns distorting, destructive, and inadvertently ridiculous-of mass culture on high culture. In this new collection of essays, ranging in subject matter from Ernest Hemingway, James Agee, and Tom Wolfe to Webster's Dictionary and the Revised Standard Version of the Bible, Macdonald is shrewd, passionate, and bracingly alive to the complexities of his subject, which he defines as being "not the dead sea of masscult but rather the life of the tide line where higher and lower organisms compete for survival."

Author Reading | Calvin Trillin reads from his book Quite Enough of Calvin Trillin: Forty Years of Funny Stuff

Known for his bestselling tribute to his wife (About Alice), his stinging satires pillorying American politicians (the hilariously poetic Deciding the Next Decider), and novels like Tepper Isn't Going Out, writer and humorist Calvin Trillin has forged a collection distilled from a lifetime of highlights in his new book. In Quite Enough, Trillin deals with such subjects as the horrors of witnessing a voodoo economics ceremony, to the mystery of how his mother managed for thirty years to feed her family with nothing but leftovers ("We have a team of anthropologists in there now looking for the original meal"). He remembers Sarah Palin with a poem called "On a Clear Day, I See Vladivostok" and John Edwards with one called "Yes, I Know He's a Mill Worker's Son, but There's Hollywood in That Hair."

Lecture | Enthusiasm and Critique

In this lecture, Amy Hollywood, Elizabeth H. Monrad Professor of Christian Studies at the Harvard Divinity School, asks what is the relationship between enthusiasm and critique? Is enthusiasm inherently uncritical or can it, rather, animate critique? And can we ever fully disentangle one from the other? Professor Hollywood suggests that we need enthusiasm— an enthusiasm that refuses to be split in two—in order to live. But if enthusiasm engenders and fuels all of our projects, including those of critique, yet critique is always in danger of killing our enthusiasm, how, then, do we survive?

Screening | 2 Films by John Akomfrah: Seven Songs for Malcolm X / The Last Angel of History

In conjunction with the theatrical premiere of John Akomfrah's The Nine Muses at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), this is the the U.S. theatrical premiere of two foundational films by the British-Ghanaian filmmaker. Seven Songs for Malcolm X (1993, 52 min.) - An homage to the inspirational African-American leader. Seven Songs for Malcolm X collects testimonies, eyewitness accounts and dramatic reenactments to tell the life, legacy, loves, and losses of Malcolm X. Featuring interviews with Malcolm X's widow Betty Shabazz, Spike Lee, and many other. The Last Angel of History (pictured, 1996, 45 min.) - An examination of the relationships between Pan-African culture, science fiction, intergalactic travel, and computer technology, this Afrofuturist cinematic essay posits science fiction--from alien abduction to genetic engineering--as a metaphor for the Pan-African experience of forced displacement, cultural alienation, and otherness. Akomfrah's analysis is rooted in an exploration of the works of artists such as funkmaster George Clinton and his Mothership Connection, Sun Ra's use of extraterrestrial iconography, and the writings of black science fiction authors Samuel R. Delaney and Octavia Butler.
