Talk | The Secret Life of Money: Design, Composition, and Covert

Covering a swath of continental fiscal history, from Ben Franklin to Ben Bernanke, Spiller leads a hands-on exploration of the physical characteristics of greenbacks. Spiller regales audiences with surprising and true stories, like the one about the bank manager who threw away hundreds of dollars in dumpsters every year – and was rewarded for doing so. Why did our founding fathers selected the color green? You know why there are thirteen olive leaves, thirteen arrows and thirteen layers in the pyramid but why is there a 14th star? Join Spiller on this fascinating exploration of the mysteries behind seemingly-ordinary greenbacks and shares his extraordinary collection of rare and unusual government misprints, offbeat bills, exonumia, and more.

Discussion | For The Public Good: Inaugural Panel

This panel inaugurates a multi-year, interdisciplinary project to examine the “public good,” issues ranging from the environment and education to information media and public policy, the state of which cannot be left to the whims of the market or to one particular sector of society because they impact society as a whole. But how are we to discuss or define the “public good” when the recent global financial crisis has led to an economic regime that relies on free-trade policy and emphasizes, with often catastrophic results, the privatization of assets and services that were previously public? This series brings together scholars and activists from a range of disciplines to generate a thoughtful critique of the “public good,” and to suggest policies and directions that might best serve it. Speakers include Michelle Fine of The Graduate Center, CUNY and Nancy Holmstrom of Rutgers University.

Opening Reception | Drawings: Robyn O'Neil's Hell

O'Neil's largest and arguably most complex work to date. At 14' long, incorporating over 35,000 collage elements and 65,000 figures, the project is both a literal and figurative odyssey. Drawn features are interspersed with cut paper to create a dense multidimensional space. In O'Neil's "HELL", a somber narrative unfurls, drawing the viewer into a world of robed figures and sweat-suit clad men clambering to exit their terrifying and gruesome existence. Inspired by Giotto's "Scenes from the Apocalypse", O'Neil's "HELL" rivals the medieval depiction of the end of the world in ambition and imagination.

Opening Reception | Paintings: Audrey Ushenko's Fête Champêtre

Uniquely rendered canvases of luxuriously composed still life and social gatherings have the airs of an extravagant garden party or celebration. Ushenko's masterful use of light and shadow and brilliant brushstroke enhance the viewer's experience. One gets senses of things that have just happened and things that are going to happen. Often, Ushenko takes liberty twisting the compositions by juxtaposing people, creatures and objects that you may not expect to be nearby or you would not have noticed otherwise. In doing so there is always an element of the unpredicted in Ushenko's work. The ordinary is far from ordinary.

Opening Reception | Paintings: Katharine Kuharic's Pound of Flesh

Kuharic continues to explore consumer culture, and how products are marketed and imaged. This meticulous and obsessive collecting is re-collaged to create paintings with extremely detailed drawings and complex painting techniques. This new body of work highlights these aspects as well as celebrity culture both pop and suburban. The personal is also incorporated throughout these new works, most pointedly in a continuing series entitled Pound of Flesh where Kuharic has been tracking her weight loss and gain through repeated symbols and motif. Shown: "Martha Stewart Living," 2011, oil on linen, 40 x 30 inches. Also opening: Lynne Yamamoto's Genteel - Yamamoto engages in the material transformation of eloquent objects that express temporal and geographical trajectories, particularly in relation to the post-WWII period in the former Pacific Theater. The lingering effects of this war and its aftermath can be excavated in material and food cultures. She elevates the status of humble things such as fabric dollies and napkins and sullies their precious surfaces, at the same time rendering the objects into ambivalent memorials.

Author Reading | Peter Filichia discusses his book Broadway Musical MVPs: 1960-2010 - The Most Valuable Players of the Past 50 Seasons

Musicals and baseball have many commonalities: both have runs, hits, and errors; both have cheap seats that aren’t so cheap and overpriced concessions; both have stars with high salaries; and both have awards at the end of the season. But baseball does have what the Tonys, Drama Desk, and Theatre World awards don’t offer: an annual Most Valuable Player award given to the single individual who made the most impact either for his team or on the season. What if musical theatre did choose an MVP? Peter Filichia takes his best guess who would received the awards for MVP of the year, comeback of the year, rookie of the year, manager of the year, and reliever of the year over the last 50 years.

Lecture | Philosophy Lecture: Hegel's Critique of the Liberal Conception of Freedom in the Philosophy of Right

With Karin de Boer. Hegel’s Philosophy of Right emerged from an age that embraced the idea that the human being as such is free. Yet the pertinence of Hegel’s political philosophy can't be defended by interpreting Hegel’s conception of freedom primarily in terms of subjective freedom. de Boer argues that these commentators unduly play down Hegel’s critique of a liberalist conception of freedom as well as the conception of the state that follows from this critique.

Slide Lecture | Mysteries of the Iconographies

In this visual lecture, artist Carolee Schneeman travels backwards and forwards in time to analyze the recurring formal properties in her work. Beginning with her obsessive childhood drawings of a staircase, Schneeman tries to unravel the mysteries of a notched stick, paper folds, indentations and the slice a line makes in space that have followed as unexpected structural motifs.

Discussion | The Big Read: Before and After Harry Potter

While J.K. Rowling's work may have popularized fantasy for mainstream readers, there has always been a strong tradition of such stories for young readers in British and American fiction. And it is these lesser-known but beloved works, as much as Rowling's and even Tolkien's fantasy, that inspired today's generation of successful fantasists. Hear some of today's most popular YA writers discuss what came before - and what's coming next! Authors Holly Black, Cassandra Clare, Justine Larbalestier, Chris Moriarty, and moderator Delia Sherman join this panel.

Screening | 2 Films by John Akomfrah: Seven Songs for Malcolm X / The Last Angel of History

In conjunction with the theatrical premiere of John Akomfrah's The Nine Muses at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), this is the the U.S. theatrical premiere of two foundational films by the British-Ghanaian filmmaker. Seven Songs for Malcolm X (1993, 52 min.) - An homage to the inspirational African-American leader. Seven Songs for Malcolm X collects testimonies, eyewitness accounts and dramatic reenactments to tell the life, legacy, loves, and losses of Malcolm X. Featuring interviews with Malcolm X's widow Betty Shabazz, Spike Lee, and many other. The Last Angel of History (pictured, 1996, 45 min.) - An examination of the relationships between Pan-African culture, science fiction, intergalactic travel, and computer technology, this Afrofuturist cinematic essay posits science fiction--from alien abduction to genetic engineering--as a metaphor for the Pan-African experience of forced displacement, cultural alienation, and otherness. Akomfrah's analysis is rooted in an exploration of the works of artists such as funkmaster George Clinton and his Mothership Connection, Sun Ra's use of extraterrestrial iconography, and the writings of black science fiction authors Samuel R. Delaney and Octavia Butler.

Concert | Sidi Touré, Acoustic Guitarist

Sidi Touré made his first guitar as a child, constructing it from his wooden writing slate in the ancient town of Gao, Mali. In 1976, Touré became the youngest member of Gao’s regional orchestra, the Songhaï Stars and won best singer twice at the Biennales du Mali. Touré’s music is an acoustic desert blues practiced in both the local Songhai tradition and American blues style. He creates a pleasant oasis in his most recent album, “Sahel Folk” for those who want to explore the dessert traditions through West African storytelling.
