Discussion | An Art Book - First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy and the 1963 Exhibition of Mona Lisa

In December 1962, Leonardo Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa set sail from Paris to New York for what many knew would be the riskiest art exhibition ever mounted. Sent as a personal loan to President and Mrs. Kennedy by the French government, the famous painting was exhibited in Washington and New York for fifty-two days, igniting “Lisa Fever” as nearly two million Americans stood in long lines for a chance to see the masterpiece. The driving force behind the painting’s high-profile visit was First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, who through the successful exhibition of Mona Lisa, pioneered the phenomenon of the blockbuster museum show. A discussion between biographer Margaret Leslie Davis and NYPL Director of Collections Strategy Victoria Steele sheds light on Jacqueline Kennedy’s surprising and extensive role in the exhibition of France’s revered treasure with rare archival photographs and historic film footage.

Talk | Artist Trenton Doyle Hancock discusses his work

Trenton Doyle Hancock was born in Oklahoma City and raised in Paris, Texas. He earned his BFA at Texas A&M University and received an MFA from the Tyler School of Art. Hancock’s prints, drawings, and collaged felt paintings work together to tell the story of the Mounds, mythical creatures that are the tragic protagonists of the artist’s unfolding narrative. Hancock transforms traditionally formal decisions—like the use of color, language, and pattern—into opportunities to create new characters, develop sub-plots, and convey symbolic meaning.

Nearly ten years in the making, La Farge's ambitious new work considers large worlds and small ones, love, memory, family, flying machines, dance music, and the end of the world.

Author Reading | Steven Pinker reads from his book The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined

Faced with the ceaseless stream of news about war, crime and terrorism, one could easily think we live in the most violent age ever seen. Yet, as New York Times bestselling author Steven Pinker shows in his startling and engaging new book, just the opposite is true: violence has been diminishing for millenia and we may be living in the most peaceful time in our species' existence. This groundbreaking book continues Pinker's exploration of the essence of human nature, mixing psychology and history to provide a remarkable picture of an increasingly nonviolent world. Exploding fatalist myths and humankind's inherent violence and the curse of modernity, this book is sure to be hotly debated in living rooms and the Pentagon alike, and will challenge and change the way we think about our society.
