Lecture | Afrofuturism

The Transdisciplinary Seminar on Afrofuturism explores how representations of science, technology, and social engineering intersect with visual cultural expressions of the African Diaspora. Science fiction is the organizing theme that unites the guest presentations and works under consideration. Visiting artists and cultural theorists lecture on the role of futuristic speculations in African diasporic art, literature, film, and music. The ability of science fiction to function as both a fractured mirror of historical experience and a projection of the collective desires of a displaced people is discussed throughout the semester. With: George E. Lewis is a trombone player, composer, and scholar in the fields of jazz and experimental music. He has been a member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) since 1971, and is a pioneer of computer music. In 2002, Lewis received a MacArthur Fellowship. Lewis has long been active in creating and performing with interactive computer systems, most notably his software called Voyager, which “listens” and “reacts” to live performers. Between 1988 and 1990, Lewis collaborated with video artist Don Ritter to create performances of interactive music and interactive video controlled by Lewis’s improvised trombone. Lewis is the author of A Power Stronger Than Itself: The AACM and American Experimental Music.

Lecture | Global Issues in Design and Visuality in the 21st Century

Global Issues is both a course and a lecture series that is open to the community. It is designed to identify the broad issues that are shaping design and art—and in turn, culture—in the early 21st century. Beginning with an introduction to cultural theory, Global Issues looks at the ways design and art mirror, critique, and change contemporary culture. Guest speakers—drawn from the fields of art, architecture, and fashion, product, and communication design, as well as philosophy, anthropology, and design history—examine the concept of culture and its dynamics in light of the radical changes brought about by globalization. Collectively they demonstrate the unique potential of designers and artists to serve as both mediators and critics of culture through their studio practices. This lecture is presented by Blair Satterfield and Marc Swackhamer, architects, HouMinn Practice.

Talk | The Architecture of Madness: Insane Asylums in the United States

Elaborately conceived, grandly constructed insane asylums were once a common sight looming on the outskirts of American towns and cities. Many of these buildings were razed long ago, and those that remain stand as grim reminders of an often cruel system. For much of the nineteenth century, these asylums epitomized the widely held belief that insanity was a curable disease and that environment-architecture in particular - was an effective means of treatment. Speaker: Carla Yanni, Professor of Art History and Assistant Vice President for Undergraduate Academic Affairs at Rutgers University. She specializes in 19th- and 20th-century architecture.

Lecture | “Sex” is Not a Mechanism: Making “Sex-Specific Medicine” More Scientific

Since the women’s health movement blossomed in the 1970s, there has been an ever-increasing trend toward examining all aspects of human health for evidence of sex differences. But some of the movement’s major achievements—such as a federal mandate to collect and analyze data by sex in all health research—may paradoxically turn out to be obstacles for understanding health differences between and within sex/gender groups. Building on her earlier work in Brain Storm: The Flaws in the Science of Sex Differences and using examples from both physical and mental health research, this year’s Silver Science lecture by Rebecca Jordan-Young will review some basic questions about measurement in “sex-specific” medicine that could revolutionize the field and yield research and clinical practice that is actually far more specific and scientific than the current approach. What kind of variable is “sex,” and can it be measured separately from “gender”? When we have information on specific biological mechanisms underlying health differences, what does the variable “sex” add to our analyses?

Talk | Outlaws or In-laws? The Effects of Gay Marriage in Scandinavia

The concept of marriage as a union of a man and a woman was fundamentally challenged by the introduction of registered partnership in Denmark in 1989. Speaker Jens Rydström has studied the interaction between gay activism and traditional party politics and traces the origins of laws that at first were extremely controversial – inside and outside the gay community – but have now gained broad popular and political support. What are the consequences of gay marriage after more than twenty years? By looking at positive and negative effects of the legislation, Rydström presents a nuanced assessment of the new ways to assimilate and recognize same-sex relationships within the framework of the Scandinavian welfare state. In English.

Screening | 2 Films by John Akomfrah: Seven Songs for Malcolm X / The Last Angel of History

In conjunction with the theatrical premiere of John Akomfrah's The Nine Muses at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), this is the the U.S. theatrical premiere of two foundational films by the British-Ghanaian filmmaker. Seven Songs for Malcolm X (1993, 52 min.) - An homage to the inspirational African-American leader. Seven Songs for Malcolm X collects testimonies, eyewitness accounts and dramatic reenactments to tell the life, legacy, loves, and losses of Malcolm X. Featuring interviews with Malcolm X's widow Betty Shabazz, Spike Lee, and many other. The Last Angel of History (pictured, 1996, 45 min.) - An examination of the relationships between Pan-African culture, science fiction, intergalactic travel, and computer technology, this Afrofuturist cinematic essay posits science fiction--from alien abduction to genetic engineering--as a metaphor for the Pan-African experience of forced displacement, cultural alienation, and otherness. Akomfrah's analysis is rooted in an exploration of the works of artists such as funkmaster George Clinton and his Mothership Connection, Sun Ra's use of extraterrestrial iconography, and the writings of black science fiction authors Samuel R. Delaney and Octavia Butler.
