Lecture | International Intervention and Conflict Resolution: Lessons for Libya

Focusing on previous international interventions in conflict resolution, this lecture looks at potential outcomes of the conflict in Libya and subsequent perspectives for democratization. Lack of democratic experience, coupled with prospects of post-conflict instability that could result in civil war, will require an international presence. The mandate of such international presence needs to take into account the specific history of Libya and build on lessons from recent international interventions in order to avoid further instability and assure sustainable democratization. A writer in residence in the Wertheim Study, speaker Piro Rexhepi has worked with various international organizations in conflict resolution and democratization. He currently teaches international relations at the New York University Center for Global Affairs.

Lecture | Philosophy Lecture: Wittgenstein and His Relation to the Jokes

With Ramon del Castillo. A discussion of the following topics: 1. Wittgenstein’s feeble sense of humor, the humoristic dimension of his techniques as a teacher and as a thinker, and the similarities and differences between humor and philosophy as therapy and care of the self. 2. Wittgenstein on comedy and tragedy, his attitudes toward Tolstoy and Hollywood movies, and his sporadic remarks on the connection between humor and ways of life. 3. Why some jokes illuminate not only the fact that following rules presupposes practices, but also the permanent tension between frames of acceptance and disruptive actions, compliance and innovation, discipline and insubordination, composure and eccentricity, normality and madness. 4. Differences between the mute and ascetic view of social life inspired by Wittgenstein and the sociological imagination, represented in examples as Ervin Goffman’s book Frames of Analysis.

Discussion | No Thing Unto Itself: Object-Oriented Politics

A panel discussion featuring artists, scholars and writers on the subject of "thingness." What are the political and ethical implications of considering all objects—whether animal, vegetable, or mineral, even whether animate or inanimate—equivalent and thereby interchangeable? Moderated by Katherine Behar, sociologist Noortje Marres, media scholar Shannon Mattern and urban designer David Turnbull discuss how this kind of perspective changes the conversation around sustainability as well as human interaction. What happens when technology reaches the scale of cities? Can an object bear responsibility that has previously been reserved for humans? Beginning with the artist's sometimes contentious relationship to material presence as a platform for the examination of these questions, this panel considers the constellation of disciplines including architecture, ecology, global geography, urban studies, and anthropology that are tackling these questions.
