Conference | Violence, Memory and Representation: The Paris Massacre of October 1961 in Historical Perspective

On the night of October 17, 1961, a peaceful demonstration of pro-FLN Algerians residing in Paris was brutally suppressed by French police. As many as 200 Algerians were killed, some when they were thrown, unconscious, into the Seine. Though long subject to historical repression, the memory of this episode of urban violence has resurfaced in force over the last decade. To mark the fiftieth anniversary of this event, Columbia faculty and invited speakers will consider this process of historical reconstruction and explore the haunting presence of October 17, 1961 in contemporary literature and film. Speakers: -Seth Graebner, Associate Professor of French and International and Area Studies, Washington University in St. Louis, "The Perfect Massacre: Victimhood and Villainy in Public Memory" -Phil Watts, Chairman of the Department of French, "October 17th on Film" Roundtable discussion with: -Kristin Ross, Professor of Comparative Literature, NYU -Muhsin al-Musawi, Professor of Arabic Literature, Department of Middle Eastern, South Asian and African Studies -Judith Surkis, Visiting Associate Professor, Department of History, Columbia and Barnard -Madeleine Dobie, Associate Professor, Department of French, Columbia (moderator)

Slide Lecture | A New Look at the Great War

With Adam Hochschild, the author of To End All Wars: A Story of Loyalty and Rebellion, 1914-1918. With a slide show of photographs, posters, documentary film footage and a little music, the author presents his new book. This unusual account of the First World War treats the conflict not as a battle between two sides, but as a battle between those who saw the war as a noble crusade and those who saw it as mutually destructive madness—and who refused to fight. The historical figures through whom he tells this story include generals, cabinet ministers, conscientious objectors, feminists, a circus lion-tamer turned antiwar activist, and an editor who, in prison, published a clandestine newspaper for his fellow war resisters on toilet paper.

Gallery Talk | Artist Michael Dinges talks about his exhibition The Dead Laptop Series

Michael Dinges uses discarded Apple laptops as his canvas, scratching their surface, just like sailors engraved whalebone to create scrimshaw. Dinges’ work is firmly rooted in the present. Entwined with the dense images he inscribes on the shiny white MacBooks and the emblematic Apple logo, are a stream of 21st-century concerns and warnings. Also included in the exhibition are several other mass-produced items Dinges has rescued from the landfill and embellished, as well as his hyper realistic drawings of products that have withstood the test of time despite rapid technological progress.
