Lecture | Eliza Lynch and the Gold of Paraguay

In 1854, an Irish courtesan named Eliza Lynch hooked up in Paris with Francisco Solano Lopez, the monumentally rich and massively egomaniacal son of Carlos Antonio Lopez, the dictator of Paraguay. Over the next 16 years, she bore him seven children and, some say, goaded him into the bloodiest war in South American history. She may have, in the process, stolen the gold and jewels known as the treasure of the country. Patricia King (pictured), a writer in residence, under the pen name Annamaria Alfieri, writes historical murder mysteries that take place against the background of fascinating points of South American history. Her next book, Invisible Country, which takes place during Lopez and Lynch's adventures, is out this July from St. Martin's Press.

Theater | Stephen Sondheim & James Lapine's Into the Woods, the Broadway Smash

A witch's curse condemns the Baker and his Wife to a life without children. They embark on a quest to find the four items required to break the spell: the cow as white as milk, the cape as red as blood, the hair as yellow as corn, and the slipper as pure as gold. Will they succeed? And what happens after "happily ever after?" A masterpiece by musical theater giants Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine, Into the Woods is a witty and irreverent reimagining of beloved classic fairytales: Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Cinderella. Featuring Amy Adams, Jack Broderick, Gideon Glick, Cooper Grodin, Ivan Hernandez, Tina Johnson, Josh Lamon, Jessie Mueller, Donna Murphy, Laura Shoop, and Tess Soltau.

The American medical system is in tatters, and political arguments often overlook the most fundamental element: human beings’ health.
