Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all. Tours are Mondays and Fridays at 2pm, and Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10am.

There will be an emphasis on mindfulness (a focus on now) with some interest in meditation (a focus on breath.) Mindfulness meditation opens a door to greater appreciation of life in the moment. The day will include 20 minute periods for practicing breath meditation, walking meditation, learning to focus on the present through the body, mindfulness of sound, and many other aspects of mindfulness. The emphasis is on learning to be present for two really different reasons. One, in order to experience life more richly. And two, because when we’re focused on the present a miracle occurs: we can’t ruminate about the past or worry about the future. All will be explained so that the beginner is comfortable. Experienced meditators will also be interested, because this mindfulness-based approach to meditation has a strong emphasis on developing self-compassion through the quality with which we relate to ourselves as we encounter imperfection.

Workshop |
In this class, the goal is not to recreate ones own image but to dig a little deeper and create a symbolic representation of oneself, persona or aspiration. The self portraits will be inspired by the crests of Samurai helmets, Datemono, which often featured empowering sculptures of animals or other symbolic imagery that represented their family or rank and their strength. You will use a variety of materials to sculpt a 3 dimensional portrait of ones inner self or aspiration. Participants will use their self awareness as the starting point for a conceptual sculpture. No experience with art is necessary. All materials will be provided. This workshop is intended for adults (18+). Instructor Anna Kuchel Rabinowitz has studied sculpture, art history, architectural history, urban planning and has been sculpting for the last ten years at the Art Students League.

New York City is a mecca for graffiti and street art, making it a very attractive playground for artists from around the world. Bushwick, in a working class district on the north side of Brooklyn adjacent to Williamsburg, has been attracting artists for some time now. The neighborhood has a fair collection of art studios and galleries, but it’s Bushwick’s industrial landscape that’s attracting the street artist. If you came looking for 1960′s Greenwich Village, you’ll find something brewing in Bushwick. Tour takes place Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
