In this class, the goal is not to recreate ones own image but to dig a little deeper and create a symbolic representation of oneself, persona or aspiration. The self portraits will be inspired by the crests of Samurai helmets, Datemono, which often featured empowering sculptures of animals or other symbolic imagery that represented their family or rank and their strength. You will use a variety of materials to sculpt a 3 dimensional portrait of ones inner self or aspiration. Participants will use their self awareness as the starting point for a conceptual sculpture.
No experience with art is necessary. All materials will be provided. This workshop is intended for adults (18+). Instructor Anna Kuchel Rabinowitz has studied sculpture, art history, architectural history, urban planning and has been sculpting for the last ten years at the Art Students League.
