Lecture | It Happened Tomorrow: Probabilities, Predictions and Prophecies

Mathematics is often described as the science of patterns. This implies that it is primarily concerned with visualizing, analyzing and predicting the phenomena we observe in the physical world and in the relationships we see among numbers. But mathematics also looks at the unpredictable, the unexpected. In this talk, Jennifer Wilson explores what it means to be truly random; how the probability of unlikely events changes depending on how the question is asked; and how stable patterns can become chaotic and then stable again as we change the way we look at them.

A drabble is a precise work of fiction of exactly 100 words. It's a voyeuristic glimpse into someone else's world, sometimes fantastic or silly; other times scary or even sad."

Opening Reception | Public Art: Demetrius Oliver's Jupiter

Celebrate the opening with the artist. Jupiter will be installed on a 25-by-75-foot billboard. It features five round photographs exposing mysterious acts and props, but lacking a human presence. In one photograph, a camera sits alone in a room in front of open violin cases placed in the windows. In another, the camera captures a group of closed umbrellas balancing upright on the edge of a bed. Set against a solid, black background, each photograph resembles a planet floating in a night sky, an association reinforced by how they appear to be incrementally rotating in space.
