Concert | Folk Music: Lucas Rotman / Serena Jean / Patrick Duffy

Lucas Rotman is a singer/songwriter living in Brooklyn. He has been writing songs and performing in the New York area for about 10 years. For the past 15 years, I have also worked as a full time elementary teacher in the New York City Public school system. With the release of her debut album Town & Country, Serena Jean reaffirms her position at the forefront of the American roots music scene, where she has become one of the performers most popular with New York City audiences and most admired by her fellow musicians. Patrick Duffy's band is himself (Mandolin/Banjo/Guitar/Dulcimer/Vocals), Derek Baird (Guitar/Harmonica/Vocals) and Moshe Schulman (Percussion/Mandolin/Vocals).

Lecture | The Study of Cosmic Rain on Manhattan

Jeff Allen of NYU on a strange and little-appreciated bit of City history and science, the study of cosmic rain, or rays, right here on Manhattan. The rain or rays are atomic nuclei from outer space traveling at near light speed. When they hit the upper atmosphere, they smash atoms in the air and cause a shower or rain of smaller particles. These reach the ground and are detected by various means.

Opening Reception | La Colonia: Spanish Immigrants in New York, 1898-1945, a Photo Exhibit

Inauguration of the exhibition with remarks by curator James D. Fernández, and by some of the owners of the photographs. In the early decades of the twentieth century, New York experienced a substantial influx of working-class immigrants from Spain. Compared to many other national groups from Europe, the Spanish colony in New York was relatively small. But the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 brought heightened visibility to New York’s Spaniards, as the city mobilized in response to the war in Spain. Using snapshots from the family albums of these immigrants and their descendents, this exhibition will chronicle the history of this forgotten episode of Spanish and US history.
