Festival | Howl! Festival 2010

JACKIE FACTORY producers CHI CHI VALENTI and JOHNNY DYNELL will present their fourth annual LOW LIFE to crown the 2010 HOWL! FESTIVAL. LOW LIFE is the free and fabulous Sunday evening climax to HOWL! - a two hour spectacular inspired by East Village decades past. Each year's theme is served up in a lavishly costumed production starring dozens of downtown's finest. This year's LOW LIFE 4: BEAT GIRL pays homage to homegrown fifties beatnik culture and the BOWERY BEATS - the rebel painters, poets and performers drifting east from Greenwich Village. Screening | Documentary: Melissa Young & Mark Dworkin's Good Food (2008)

Something remarkable is happening in the fields and orchards of the Pacific Northwest: small family farmers are making a comeback. They’re growing much healthier food, and lots more food per acre, while using less energy and water than factory farms. For decades Northwest agriculture was focused on a few big crops for export. But to respond to climate change and the end of cheap energy, each region needs to produce more of its own food and to grow food more sustainably. Producers, farmers’ markets, distributors, stores, restaurants and public officials who are developing a more sustainable food system are interviewed. 73 min.

Concert | Argento Chamber Ensemble performs Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire Book 1

Program: Gérard Pesson The light has not the arms to carry us for piano Joshua Fineberg Tremors for piano Beat Furrer Invocation VI for bass flute and singer Arnold Schoenberg Pierrot Lunaire Book 1 Tristan Murail La Barque mystique for flute, clarinet, piano, violin, and cello Pierre Boulez Improvisé pour le Dr. K for flute, clarinet, piano, violin, and cello Roberto Sierra Cancionero Sefardi for mezzo-soprano, flute, piano, violin, and cello Argento New Music Project is pleased to present a new weekly concert series titled Lunar Movements: A Constellation of Contemporary Music Orbiting Pierrot Lunaire. Throughout Fall 2010, five monthly programs are slated for the superb acoustic space of the Austrian Cultural Forum New York in midtown Manhattan. First performed in 1912, Arnold Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire is a seminal work whose instrumentation came to define the prototypical late twentieth century chamber ensemble. As we near the 100th anniversary of the premiere, the Lunar Movements series presents compositions that highlight and reflect on three different approaches to writing found in Pierrot Lunaire. There will be a post-concert discussion: What is music about music? Using Schoenberg’s Valse de Chopin as a starting point, the discussion will explore the subject of modern composition through historical references. They will play examples of the Sephardic Jewish folksongs in Cancioniero Sefardi, and discuss the overall use of vernacular music using Gérard Pesson’s The light has not the arms to carry us as a focal point. The Argento Chamber Ensemble is the performance arm of the Argento New Music Project. Founded in 2000 to perform compositions embodying pressing concerns in Western music, Argento consists of 9 core members and regularly expands to up to 30 musicians. Argento has toured widely in the US and abroad, and has worked closely with leading contemporary composers.

Opening Reception | Painting & Photography: Bianca Beck & Josh Brand's I Live My Thoughts

n exhibition of new work by Beck and Brand, and a selection of “Memory Jugs” by various unknown artists. The objects in the exhibition — paintings, photographs, and vessels — can be thought of as recording devices. One can see them as instruments for recording feelings, perceptions, memories, bodies, times, and actions. Some of the objects are made in ways that conflate thought and action, abstraction and representation, memory and imagination, bodies and things.

Opening Reception | Painting: Alex Olson's As a Verb, As a Noun, In Peach and Silver

Each of these paintings has a story to tell of its making, and they are here to share them. They are swapping tales of texture and text, mark making as both material and as sign, exteriors and ideographs, supports and surfaces. They are exchanging gestures between canvases, stretching them off on tangents and burying them beneath new assertions. Some of these paintings are more declarative than others, some more articulate, and some more discreet. Some still think that grids are where it’s at, while others argue for more displacement.
