Screening | Polish Television: Krzysztof Kieslowski's The Decalogue (1989)

The Decalogue is ten short films inspired by the Ten Commandments. Each story corresponds to a commandment and centers on different residents of the same modern Warsaw apartment complex. Director Stanley Kubrick described this as the only masterpiece he could name in his lifetime. Showing: Episode 7 "Thou shalt not steal" - but in this case the 'theft' is of a child by her real mother, who then finds herself emotionally unable to cope with the responsibility, while the stable and loving family that brought the child up are distraught. In Polish with English subtitles. Episode 8 "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour." A Polish-American researcher visits Warsaw and attends a lecture about ethics. Afterwards, she approaches Zofia, the lecturer, and says that she is the little Jewish girl whom Zofia refused to shelter during World War II. In Polish with English subtitles.

Author Reading | Robert Klara discusses his book FDR’s Funeral Train: A Betrayed Widow, a Soviet Spy, and a Presidency in the Balance

The historian and author presents a lecture and PowerPoint presentation on his new book. This critically acclaimed work is a groundbreaking, behind-the-scenes look at the top-secret train that carried President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s body a thousand miles from Warm Springs, Georgia to Hyde Park, New York, in the spring of 1945. For this event, Klara will focus on the most fascinating and dangerous leg of the train’s journey: its 28-mile route through the City of New York. Because the train carried not only FDR’s body, but 140 of the most important members of the federal government (including President Truman and all nine justices of the Supreme Court), its serpentine path through Manhattan, Queens, and the Bronx constituted a nightmare for the Secret Service, the FBI and the NYPD. Drawing from declassified White House documents and rarely seen archival photographs, Klara will recreate the tension and intrigue aboard the Pullman cars—one of which counted a KGB spy as one of its occupants.
