Positioned at the southern tip of India, where monsoon winds and ocean currents converge, Sri Lanka has long attracted sailors from both friendly and marauding naval powers. Archaeological evidence suggests that hundreds, possibly thousands, of Chinese ships visited the island, making it a central hub in the Southern Maritime Silk Route and a key link in regional trade networks.

This screening features films on the theme Debt, Dependency, and City Stories. Enslavement and colonization established persisting structures of economic dispossession, instituting dependency and debt as both historical and contemporary obstacles to the autonomous flourishing of the African continent and diaspora. Le Franc (1994) Djibril Diop Mambéty unleashed his exuberant and poignant cinema against the craven conditions of neocolonialism and financial deprivation on the African continent. Le Franc (1994) is one part of an unfinished trilogy dedicated to the minoritized experiences he always championed as meaningful and revelatory. The protagonist is a penniless musician, Marigo—played with lanky, languid charm by Dieye Ma Dieye—whose anarchic trek through Dakar with a lottery ticket in hand unfolds as both a deeply moving journey and an indictment of the colonially imposed CFA franc monetary system. Director: Djibril Diop Mambéty De cierta manera (One Way or Another) 1974/1977 Working in revolutionary Cuba, the fearless Sara Gómez upheld but also expanded the state’s vision of liberation to fully address ongoing issues of racialized economic disparity and marginalization in her hybrid documentary De cierta manera (1974/1977). Blending stark documentary footage and a knotted fictional love story, her monumental film is a lucid examination of education, labor, poverty, racism, sexism, and popular religion from the perspective of an Afro-Cubana. Classical Music | Young Ambassador of Hungarian Classical Music Performs Various Piano Works
Talented young pianist, Soma Balázs-Piri, performs a recital. Somais a 21-year-old pianist who has already attained global success and several first prizes in prestigious international piano competitions, including the world-renowned Bartók Competition. In 2020, Soma was named the Young Ambassador of Hungarian Classical Music. In 2021, he received the Hungarian award for young artists, the "Junior Prima Award". Notably, he portrayed young Mozart in the production "Amadeus: Life in Pictures." Soma has performed with renowned opera singer/conductor Placido Domingo several times, and also published a studio recording with him. Performing with the world-renowned cellist HAUSER several times in O2 Arena in London & in Singapore, Soma gained further international recognition. He's performed with several orchestras, including the London Mozart Players, the Liszt Chamber Orchestra, the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Concerto Budapest, and the OMM Orchestra (Singapore). In addition to being an excellent classical concert pianist, he composes his own music.

After a lavish dinner party in an opulent Mexico City mansion, a group of wealthy guests finds themselves inexplicably unable to leave the room. As hours turn into days, social conventions unravel and civility gives way to paranoia, selfishness, and desperation. In this surreal and darkly satirical allegory, Luis Buñuel dismantles the veneer of the upper class, exposing the fragility of social order and the primal instincts that emerge when people are stripped of their illusions of control. Director: Luis Buñuel Cast: Silvia Pinal, Enrique Rambal, Lucy Gallardo. Claudio Brook Luis Buñuel was a Spanish and Mexican filmmaker who is widely considered to be one of the greatest and most influential filmmakers of all time. Buñuel's works are known for their avant-garde surrealism, which was also infused with political commentary. Buñuel's career spanned the 1920s through the 1970s. Buñuel earned five Cannes Film Festival prizes, two Berlin International Film Festival prizes, a BAFTA Award, and an Academy Award in 1972. He was nominated twice for the Nobel Prize in Literature, in 1968 and then in 1972.

Editor Mariana Mogilevich provides a talk about Urban Omnibus' reporting from a New York City that doesn't exist yet, and the Cross Bronx Expressway as a front in the fight for a just and joyful urban realm. How do the stories we tell about the city we live in determine the city we can imagine in the future? Mariana Mogilevich is editor in chief of Urban Omnibus, The Architectural League of New York's publication dedicated to observing, understanding, and shaping the city. Over almost a decade at Urban Omnibus, she has commissioned and edited hundreds of editorial features from artists, designers, scholars, writers for an interdisciplinary, multivocal portrait of the making of New York City's built environment. The lecture will be followed by a Q&A moderated by Helena Uceda.
