Lecture | Expert Explores the Cognitive Benefits of Language Learning in Older Adults (In Person AND Online!)

Neurocognitive processes of language, cognition, and aging expert in Dr. Ladan Ghazi Saidi presents a talk on the Plastic Aging Brain: Language Learning as Cognitive Intervention in Older Adults. While the cognitive benefits of lifelong bilingualism are well-documented, the impact of acquiring a new language in later life remains relatively underexplored. Over the past five years, Dr. Saidi's team has conducted multiple behavioral and neuroimaging studies investigating the cognitive and neural outcomes of language learning in monolingual older adults as a non-pharmacological intervention for healthy cognitive aging. Behavioral and neuroimaging findings consistently demonstrate that new language learning in older adults leads to measurable improvements in cognitive control, including enhanced performance on global cognition, as well as executive function tasks and is associated with neuroplasticity in prefrontal and other cortical regions implicated in executive processing. The cognitive benefits appear to be moderated by factors such as intervention engagement and engagement time.

Screening | Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat (2024): Documentary about the Cold War & Jazz Activism

United Nations, 1960: the Global South ignites a political earthquake, jazz musicians Abbey Lincoln and Max Roach crash the Security Council, Nikita Khrushchev bangs his shoe, and the U.S. State Department swings into action, sending jazz ambassador Louis Armstrong to Congo to deflect attention from the CIA-backed coup. Director Johan Grimonprez captures the moment when African politics and American jazz collided in this magnificent essay film, a riveting historical rollercoaster that illuminates the political machinations behind the 1961 assassination of Congo's leader Patrice Lumumba. Richly illustrated by eyewitness accounts, official government memos, testimonies from mercenaries and CIA operatives, speeches from Lumumba himself, and a veritable canon of jazz icons, Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat interrogates colonial history to tell an urgent and timely story of precedent that resonates more than ever in today's geopolitical climate. Gallery Talk | Learn about the Art of F. Edwin Church

Enjoy an illustrated talk about the life and art of F. Edwin Church (1876–1975), presented by Janice L. Wiley, director of the F. Edwin Church Catalogue Raisonné Project. Despite sharing a name with the famous American landscape painter, Church became a celebrated artist in his own right. He chose to sign his paintings “F. Edwin Church” to distinguish himself professionally as he endeavored to create his own artistic identity. Rooted in the traditions of Impressionism and Japonisme, Church’s work nevertheless reflects modern life in the 20th century. Critics praised his opulent portraits of women in contemporary fashions blended with elements of Japanese art and design. He also found inspiration in the world around him, filling his canvases with vibrant flowers, birds, and urban and natural landscapes he encountered abroad and on Long Island.

Author Reading | New Yorker  Journalist Discusses His New BookThe Spinach King

Longtime New Yorker journalist John Seabrook tells the tale of his own prominent family, which rose to riches and high-class status thanks to...creamed spinach. In his latest book, a New York Times Editor’s Choice, The Spinach King, he recounts the details of the “shocking but juicy” story. The founder of the family fortune, industrial farmer C.F. Seabrook, was known as “the Henry Ford of agriculture”. His son Jack, a keen businessman, was poised to take over what Life called “the biggest vegetable factory on earth.” But the Seabrooks’ carefully cultivated facade—glamorous outings in horse-drawn carriages, luxurious wine cellars, and movie star girlfriends—hid dark secrets that led to the implosion of the family, and its business. As compelling and nuanced as Succession, The Spinach King is “a tremendous tale” (Financial Times), a compulsively readable story of class and privilege, betrayal and revenge.
