Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Opening Reception | Shadows and Substance: Paintings by Marcia Haufrecht

Shadows and Substance brings together and contrasts two essential modes of Marcia Haufrecht’s painting: shadows, explorations of the abstract qualities of shadows as they merge with their surroundings—a swimming pool, a sandy beach, or a grassy lawn—hinting at the mysterious identities of their subjects and substance, realistic representations of the people whom she has observed in the subway, at lakes and parks, and on beaches. Together, Haufrecht’s two modes of painting present a revealing portrait of modern life—while some of the painting’s subjects are engrossed in electronic devices, relaxing outdoors, and conversing with friends, others convey loneliness and alienation.

Opening Reception | New Sculptures by Brian Jungen

An exhibition of new sculptures by renowned artist Brian Jungen. In 1998, while living in Vancouver the artist conceived his first sculptural works, “Prototype for New Understanding” (1998-2005). Converting Nike Air Jordan trainers into anthropological masks, using the traditional colors of black, white, red, integrated with human hair, Jungen made poignant references to contemporary assimilations and the commercial devaluing of revered customs and symbols. The process was an intimate one, as the shoes were laboriously altered by Jungen's hand. Ultimately they were presented in a museum-like display as precious artifacts, with glass vitrines and supporting armatures.

Dance Performance | Panopticon: Choreography by Jillian Peña

Panopticon, a duet performed by Alexandra Albrecht and Rebecca Warner, takes inspiration from Michel Foucault’s Discipline and Punish, Panopticism. The dance fuses existential murmurings with spiraling movement structures filtered through a balletic sensibility. Diving further into her fascination with unison and mirroring, Panopticon investigates how identity can only be asserted in relation to another, through choreographic reflections and multiplications, a kaleidoscopic arena of bodies is created everything is seen at all times.
