Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Workshop | Finding Your World War One Ancestors

On April 6, 1917, the United States entered World War I or the “Great War.” Nearly five million American men served in the armed services during the war. In addition, many women served as nurses, relief workers, and in other non-combat roles. As we prepare to commemorate the Centennial Anniversary, now is the time to search for your WWI ancestors or learn more about the ones you have already discovered. Using a fascinating case study of a common American pilot stationed in France, learn the steps to search for records of your WWI ancestor and the potential sources of information about his or her war experiences. Digital and print resources available at the New York Public Library and elsewhere will be featured in this presentation.

Performance | Go Forth: A Performance by Kaneza Schaal

Drawing inspiration from the Egyptian Book of the Dead, GO FORTH is a performance and photo installation that considers how we create space in our lives for the presence of the absent. Burial is proposed not as erasure but as offering restitution and performing rites. The 3,000-year-old funerary text is approached as an ancient performance score: excavating the spells and incantations to create a series of burial vignettes, fragments of translation, memory and imagination. Photographic funerary murals usher the audience into a mythological underground landscape. Galvanized by the intimate relationship between black people and death around the world, GO FORTH paves way for its audience to reflect on their individual and collective mourning processes.

Jazz | Kamasi Washington, Versatile Jazz Saxophonist

At the age of 13, Kamasi Washington started a lifelong quest discovering the many wonders of music. One night, his father left his soprano saxophone lying on the piano. Kamasi, filled with curiosity for all the beauty he heard from the instrument, picked up his father’s horn. Even though he didn’t know anything about the saxophone – in fact, never even touched one – he played Wayne Shorter’s composition “Sleeping Dancer Sleep On,” his favorite song at the time. Over the years, he has performed and recorded with many of his musical heroes from various genres, including Gerald Wilson, McCoy Tyner, Freddie Hubbard, Kenny Burrell, George Duke, Lauryn Hill, Jeffrey Osborne, Mos Def, Quincy Jones, Stanley Clark, Harvey Mason and Chaka Khan. Kamasi’s own band “The Next Step” is a modern spin on a big band, which includes two drummers, two upright bass players, keyboard players, three horns players, a pianist, and a vocalist. In addition, Kamasi is part of a west coast musical collective called the “West Coast Get Down.”

Concert | Alt Rockers: Violent Femmes / Kristin Hersh

The first new album in fifteen years from Violent Femmes, We Can Do Anything, finds frontman Gordon Gano’s seething angst and rueful humor undiminished — the record pulses with “the playful quirkiness, infectious beats, and jittery observations of the band’s earliest work.” (NPR Music) Kristin Hersh’s trenchant explorations of “rage, aggression, and mental chaos” (NY Times) with Throwing Muses helped define American alt rock in the ‘80s and ‘90s. Her subsequent work as a solo artist and with her power trio 50 Foot Wave, if less celebrated, is equally vital.
