Dance Performance | Panopticon: Choreography by Jillian Peña

Panopticon, a duet performed by Alexandra Albrecht and Rebecca Warner, takes inspiration from Michel Foucault’s Discipline and Punish, Panopticism. The dance fuses existential murmurings with spiraling movement structures filtered through a balletic sensibility. Diving further into her fascination with unison and mirroring, Panopticon investigates how identity can only be asserted in relation to another, through choreographic reflections and multiplications, a kaleidoscopic arena of bodies is created everything is seen at all times.

Opening Reception | How to Make Space: spatial realities of a dense urban environment

The exhibition highlights the powerful way in which female migrant workers in Hong Kong, China, use temporary structures to create community. Motivated by employment opportunities, over 300,000 women have migrated to Hong Kong for domestic jobs. Jennifer Davis, an architect, and Su-Ying Lee, a contemporary art curator experiment with unconventional platforms to mobilize new interactions between art, place, and audiences. The artworks engage with aspects of the spatial realities of a dense urban environment, the conflation of work and life, and concepts of home.

Dance Performance | An Epilogue for Otro Teatro: True Love: Dance by Luciana Achugar

This is Achugar’s continuing search for another kind of theater: one that connects us to our central desire to move and to the primal and basic, but profound desire to dance to and with music. As in all of Achugar’s works, this piece is concerned with the post-colonial world – searching for an undoing of current power structures from the inside out. It sets free a new “post-civilized” self that resists Western assumptions of beauty and order. It is also a love letter to New York house music through a long-form performance communion ritual, where the audience is moved from apathy to empathy by sharing the music and space with the performers and where they get to choose how to view or interact with the piece whether its sitting still, walking around, dancing or coming and going as they please.

Opening Reception | Infrastructures of Pain: Andrea Crespo, Adelita Husni-Bey, Carissa Rodriguez

How can one discuss painful issues without victimizing those who are affected by them anew? Picturing and “regarding the pain of others” (Susan Sontag) involves the risk of triggering a double victimization, an unbalanced relationship between those who talk about or observe pain, on the one hand, and those who suffer it without the power to articulate it themselves, on the other. Three artistic approaches are de-victimizing the imagery and rhetoric of pain. Reversing the gaze, they focus on the structures that produce victims and their catalysts rather than attempting to illustrate pain. These works draw on victimizing discourses and operate within their visual paradigms, interspersing them with fissures, cracks, and twists.
