Opening Reception | Metaxu: woven paintings with visual poetry and space for imagination

Martha Tuttle's works capture the ephemeral nuances of time, spirit and nature. Her paintings are physical, breathing objects in which the fragmentation preserves space for imagination. The artist uses two layers of paper, almost silk in feel, and the outermost layer is a loosely draped weaving made from hand spun wool that was beaten with a mallet for hours and dyed repeatedly to achieve the right depth of color. Weavings call to mind Penelope, Odysseus' wife, who weaves and re-weaves her unfolding experience. The works contain metaphysical stories as well as the more immediate story that is the interaction between the body and the material.

Opening Reception | Drawings: All that is left behind

Aditi Singh's densely worked, often large scale drawings are generated - over extended periods of time - through the meeting and clashing of mediums: paper, ink, graphite, and charcoal. "What interests me is the interplay between letting an image hover and allowing it to settle into a geography. The tenacity of a mark depends on the velocity of touch. There is a synergy, a tension, in watching ink and charcoal slide against each other building tone, texture, and rhythm.."
