Discussion | From Dialogue to Action

Thursday, October 29, 2009, 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm

Free; call to RSVP

A panel discussion with Fatima A. Shama, Shamil Idriss, Radha Kramer and others. It will be followed by a small reception, and an opportunity to meet the presenters. The panel will explore how to transform dialogue into action through these three different mediums.

Shama is Commissioner of the NYC Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs and Senior Education Policy Advisor to Mayor Michael Bloomberg. She helped design the “Service in Schools” initiative, worked with the NYPD and other law enforcement agencies on school safety, and contributed to the renewal of the city’s school governance legislation, which was signed into law recently by New York Gov. David Paterson.

Idriss currently serves as Executive Director of the Alliance of Civilizations Media Fund. Previously, he was deputy director, and was appointed by former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan. From 2000 to 2004, Idriss was chief operating officer of Search for Common Ground (SFCG), with a portfolio that included global operations. He worked on SFCG’s United States-Iran initiative to improve relations, and facilitated the first public visit of Americans to Iran since the Iranian Revolution in 1979. Idriss also has managed projects on Hutu-Tutsi ethnic cooperation in Rwanda, including the first independent multi-ethnic radio outlet in Burundi, and has facilitated workshops with prison inmates on alternatives to violence in conflict management.

Kramer is the Founder and Director of the TE’A Project. In 2008, she founded Radha Productions to use theatre and the performing arts in the service of peace building and conflict transformation. Kramer began her career working as the assistance artistic director with the NiteStar program in NYC.

The discussion will be moderated by New York Times consultant Haris Agha.
