Lecture | Archeology Scholar Discusses Preserving Significant Terrains & Indigenous Ancestral Homelands

This lecture by Brian Daniels of the University of Pennsylvania and President of the Archaeological Institute of America focuses on the Shasta Indian Nation, documenting the Kikaceki traditional cultural landscapes. It demonstrates vital historic links between the Tribe and its ancestral homeland. Native American tribes and archaeologists share a common interest in preserving significant terrains. Following negotiations with the State of California in 2024, Governor Gavin Newsom agreed that Kikaceki’s 2,820 acres would be returned. This includes places sacred to the Shasta, serving as a reminder to maintain this territory for both its people and for future generations.
