Talk | High-Impact Portrait Photographer Discusses His Creative Process & Its Nuances

Photographer and director Ben Franke discusses his creative process and the nuance of approaching photography at different speeds. In a world where photography has become so popular it can be a challenge to standout from the crowd, some photographers push through the sea of redundancy with a signature style that's as refreshing and authentic as it is engaging and unique. Franke is one such photographer. As comfortable capturing the excitement of parkour as he is crafting intimate portraiture, Ben's work is full of energy and passion.

Talk | Film Professor Breaks Down Psychoanalysis in Storytelling

Mark Voelpel, Associate Professor of Screenwriting and Film Production at Brooklyn College, explores how psychoanalysis informs storytelling--and how filmmakers use it to spark emotional breakthroughs on screen and within their audiences.. Through stories we process trauma, desire, conflict, and identity-much like in therapy. A powerful film allows us to step into the protagonist's world and face our own emotions within its imagined space. Far from mere entertainment, films can serve as psychological tools for healing, insight, and transformation-stories as the talking cure.

Classical Music | Sonatenabend: Juilliard Students Perform Sonata Masterpieces (In Person AND Online!)

An evening of sonatas showcasing the beauty and balance of the gender. This concert offers expressive interpretations of works from the Classical and Romantic repertoire. The Classical period in clkassical music is a specific era, generally from about 1750 to 1820, characterized by a shift from the complex counterpoint of the Baroque to a lighter, clearer style with more elegant and balanced forms. Key composers include Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven (whose early works fall within this period). During this time, the symphony, string quartet, and piano emerged as dominant forms, and the orchestra grew in size, leading to new possibilities in texture and dynamics. Romantic-era of classical music (roughly 1800-1910) is known for its emphasis on emotional expression, individualism, and drama, diverging from the structured rules of the Classical period. Key composers include Chopin, Tchaikovsky, and Brahms, while iconic works like Chopin's "Nocturnes," Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake," and Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde" epitomize the era's passionate and expansive style. Note: Please arrive 30-60 minutes in advance of your performance to sign in to the Juilliard building and receive your visitor badge. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
