Lecture | Expert Discusses How Russians Experience the War with Ukraine in Everyday Life (In Person AND Online!)

Social anthropologist Yakov Lurie discusses how Russians experience the war with Ukraine in everyday life, across social and geographic contexts. When asked whether Russians support, oppose, or ignore the war in Ukraine, the temptation is to look for simple answers: yes or no, for or against. But such framing overlooks the diversity of Russian society and the complexity of how people actually experience the war. Since February 2022, the Public Sociology Laboratory has documented these experiences through more than 500 in-depth interviews and 1,500 pages of ethnographic observations across places in Russia, including border regions directly affected by military actions. This in-depth research has shown that geographic closeness to the fighting does not determine how “close” or “real” the war feels. Social factors—community ties, cultural background, economic position, or personal identity—often play a greater role. A person living thousands of miles from the front may interact daily with soldiers, follow frontline news, and see the war as a defining event in his or her life. Meanwhile, someone whose street shakes from nearby shelling may convince themselves that the war is distant and irrelevant.

Franke is one such photographer. As comfortable capturing the excitement of parkour as he is crafting intimate portraiture, Ben's work is full of energy and passion.

Screening | Little Girl Blue (2023): French Docudrama (+ Filmmaker Discussion)

Screening of Little Girl Blue, followed by a conversation with French director Mona Achache and Spanish filmmaker Isabel Coixet. French writer and photographer Carole Achache took her own life in 2016, leaving behind thousands of photos, letters, and recordings. As her daughter, filmmaker Mona Achache, carries out the difficult work of archiving this trove, she finds herself searching for the source of her mother's anguish. To help her make sense of Carole's life and death, Mona enlists actress Marion Cotillard to embody her mother, wearing her clothes and reciting her recorded musings with Carole's exact tone and inflection. The result is a sui generis hybrid between documentary and drama that plumbs one of France's great minds and brings out a complex array of treasures. Book Discussion | A Turning Point in Church–State Debates: The Great Christmas Boycott of 1906 (Online!)

This virtual book talk with historian Scott D. Seligman examines the 1906 protest that ignited a major public battle over religion in American schools. Sparked by a Brooklyn principal urging Jewish students to “be more like Jesus Christ,” the ensuing community-wide boycott challenged proselytizing in public classrooms and forced the city to reconsider religious content in school celebrations. Seligman traces how the controversy shaped long-term efforts to limit Christian influence in public life. The talk explores the broader struggle over religious neutrality in American education and the lasting legacy of this pivotal moment.

Lecture | Expert Discusses Violence in Italian History

Professor and author David Forgacs, NYU, discusses the history of Italian violence on the occasion of the publication of the paperback edition of his book, Mesaggi di sangue: La violenza nella storia d’Italia. From the battles of the Risorgimento to the decimations of the First World War, from fascist squad violence to state or mafia-led massacres, from armed repression of protests to black and red terrorism, the history of contemporary Italy is marked by a series of violent acts. These are messages written in the blood of victims, intended to communicate power through violence. In Messaggi di sangue, David Forgacs, one of the most original and innovative scholars of contemporary Italy, examines twelve cases of violence that occurred in the country and its colonies between 1859 and 2018. The result is a book that changes the way we think not only about violence but also about Italian history over the past century and a half.

Talk | Painter & Art Professor Discusses Her Craft & Career

Artist Sophie Grant discusses her practice, which incorporates drawing and painting, observation and abstraction. Concerned with language acquisition and memory, the paintings operate as daily landscapes invoking the blurred and mutable fluidity of free-form imagery. The paintings are a synthesis of formal interruptions which include staining methods from Color Field painting, stencil manipulations picked up from printmaking, and mark-making inspired by naturalist field studies. Grant is an Assistant Adjunct Professor at Pace University and Baruch College. She recently mounted a solo show at Astor Weeks in NYC.

Talk | Film Professor Breaks Down Psychoanalysis in Storytelling

Mark Voelpel, Associate Professor of Screenwriting and Film Production at Brooklyn College, explores how psychoanalysis informs storytelling--and how filmmakers use it to spark emotional breakthroughs on screen and within their audiences.. Through stories we process trauma, desire, conflict, and identity-much like in therapy. A powerful film allows us to step into the protagonist's world and face our own emotions within its imagined space. Far from mere entertainment, films can serve as psychological tools for healing, insight, and transformation-stories as the talking cure.

Classical Music | Sonatenabend: Juilliard Students Perform Sonata Masterpieces (In Person AND Online!)

An evening of sonatas showcasing the beauty and balance of the gender. This concert offers expressive interpretations of works from the Classical and Romantic repertoire. The Classical period in clkassical music is a specific era, generally from about 1750 to 1820, characterized by a shift from the complex counterpoint of the Baroque to a lighter, clearer style with more elegant and balanced forms. Key composers include Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven (whose early works fall within this period). During this time, the symphony, string quartet, and piano emerged as dominant forms, and the orchestra grew in size, leading to new possibilities in texture and dynamics. Romantic-era of classical music (roughly 1800-1910) is known for its emphasis on emotional expression, individualism, and drama, diverging from the structured rules of the Classical period. Key composers include Chopin, Tchaikovsky, and Brahms, while iconic works like Chopin's "Nocturnes," Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake," and Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde" epitomize the era's passionate and expansive style. Note: Please arrive 30-60 minutes in advance of your performance to sign in to the Juilliard building and receive your visitor badge. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
