Screening | The Family Oppenheim (1938): Saviet Anti-Nazi Film (+ Discussion with Experts)

Experience the long-lost US premiere of The Family Oppenheim- a powerful Soviet-made anti-Nazi film written by acclaimed German-Jewish novelist Lion Feuchtwanger in collaboration with visionary Soviet Jewish filmmakers Grigorii and Serafima Roshal. Conceived in exile, censored in Britain, and banned in the United States, The Family Oppenheim, based on Feuchtwanger's 1933 novel, stands as one of the earliest cinematic warnings against Hitler's rise to power and fascism's brutal reshaping of Germany. Premiering internationally in the spring of 1939 but soon banned and forgotten for nearly nine decades, the film now returns to US screens - newly restored, translated, and subtitled through a remarkable student-led research project at the University of Oregon led by Miriam Chorley-Schulz. Experience a rediscovered masterpiece once banned by American censors - a work of resistance, vision, and urgency that still echoes powerfully today. Director: Grigori Roshal Cast: Vladimir Balashov, Iosif Tolchanov, Ada Voytsik, Nikolai Plotnikov Accompanying the screening, Miriam Chorley-Schulz (Holocaust Studies scholar at the University of Oregon) and Rossen Djagalov (Russian and Slavic Studies scholar with NYU) will have an illuminating conversation tracing the film's extraordinary journey from its complex conception to its celebrated 1938 Moscow premiere to decades of suppression, and finally, to its revival today.

Book Discussion | Learn about the Life of Activist Jessica Mitford (In Person AND Online!)

Author of Trouble Maker: The Fierce Unruly Life of Jessica Mitford Carla Kaplan discusses the life of Jessica Mitford with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Diane McWhorter. Jessica Mitford, fifth of the six famous “Mitford Girls,” was brought up to marry well and reproduce her wealth and privilege, not to advocate for the less advantaged. Her five beautiful sisters have been subjects of books and movies dedicated to their naughty, glamorous lives. Jessica—known as Decca—ran away to America to forge a wilder rebel’s life. As this richly researched book details, Decca broke the Mitford mold—fighting fascism in the Spanish Civil War, becoming an American Communist and pioneering witty, wildly popular journalism, including her blockbuster, The American Way of Death, placing her at the heart of social justice battles. Decca relentlessly injected laughter into her politics, encouraging the activists she influenced to do likewise. From famed baby doctor Benjamin Spock to best friend Maya Angelou, her anti-authoritarian irreverence had a profound impact on American culture. Mining extensive, untapped sources, Kaplan’s passionate biography of an unlikely life demonstrates that Decca’s social empathy was hard-won and self-taught, a model with particular relevance today and a powerful, modern example of female adventure and freedom.

Book Discussion | Editor & Poet Discuss Re-Issue of John Wienser's Book, Behind the State Capitol: Or Cincinnati Pike

Editor Raymond Foye and poet Peter Gizzi discuss the reissue of John Wieners' Behind the State Capitol: Or Cincinnati Pike. John Wieners (1934–2002) was a founding member of the “New American” poetry that flourished in America after the Second World War.  Available in print for the first time in 50 years, Behind the State Capitol: Or Cincinnati Pike has long enjoyed cult status. It is the record of a poet whose life has been shattered by poverty, drug addiction, and mental illness. Wieners creates a complex schizo-analysis of language, capitalism, incarceration, and state power, while reflecting on unpopular themes of aging and loneliness in the gay world. It is also a paean for his beloved city of Boston, as he witnessed its destruction by the onerous forces of urban renewal. Considered by many to be his masterpiece, the book was met variously with indifference and outrage when it was published in 1975. In 1982, most remaining copies of the book were destroyed in the arson fire of Fag Rag/Good Gay Poets offices.

Play | Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead: Absurd Comedy Hamlet Spinoff

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead is a Shakespearean tragedy turned upside down, inside out, and shaken vigorously.  Minor characters take center stage as Rosencrantz and Guildenstern stumble through Hamlet, on their way to a fate Shakespeare has already written for them. Absurd comedy abounds as the pair of hapless heroes ponder the meaning of life (they don’t figure it out), flip coins (it’s always heads), and struggle to remember which one of them is which (they get it mostly right). Content warning: This play contains imagery of death and suicide, as well as blood. Written by Tom Stoppard. Directed by Devin E. Haqq. Cast: Jesse Cao Long, Pauline Lara, Juan Pablo Caceres, Peyton Turowski, Brandon Pineda-Bayudan, Britni Camacho, Mirza Haas, Ravyn Rochelle, Ronit Kathuria, Caden Sevier, Aaron Tyler, Ciro Saravia, Lance Brown, and Robert Bunn.
