Lecture | Learn about Intellectual Commons & Architecture

Anooradha Siddiqi (Associate Professor, Architecture, Barnard College) examines artistic practice in the making of an intellectual commons. The talk will consider the process of curating and constructing Dadaab Commons at the GoDown Arts Centre in Nairobi in 2025, an exhibitionary outgrowth of years of deep research and community practice rooted in East Africa. Entangling artistic and scholarly inquiry, works in the exhibition take object lessons from the Dadaab refugee camps to understand migration, settlement, land politics, and environmental futures—in East Africa, Afro-Asia, and beyond. How do we think collectively with people living their lives in refugee camps? How do we move our work away from common extraction and toward common futures? What do we learn, when we look closely at a refugee camp? How does an architecture of migration give way to structures for a commons? Extending core questions in the book Architecture of Migration (Duke University Press), this talk asks how methodologies for historical scholarship may be brought to bear urgently on questions of how we may live together through shared artistic experience.

Play | Seven in One Blow, or The Brave Little Kid: A Family Play Inspired by The Grimm's Fairy Tale!

" ...(a) genuinely sweet, heart-warming, heart-filling hour of theatre." - NYTheatre.com "...what could be better than a play that asks you to shout? Well, one that asks you to sing..." - The New York Times Adapted from the classic fairy tale by The Brothers Grimm, The Brave Little Tailor. Seven In One Blow, or The Brave Little Kid tells the story of a child living in the city who kills seven flies with a single swat and makes a belt emblazoned with "SEVEN IN ONE BLOW" to commemorate the event. As he is traveling about, most people think his belt refers to seven people and assign the Kid all kinds of difficult tasks based on this faulty presumption. Along the way a few interesting things are learned: an Ogre finds that you don't always have to show how strong you are... sometimes it's okay just to be quiet about it; a girl realizes that when you tease people you are hurting someone who may be just like you; and a scary monster understands that because she is loved, she may not be so scary after all. In the end, the Kid ultimately discovers that a parent's love and care has no bounds..

Play | Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead: Absurd Comedy Hamlet Spinoff

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead is a Shakespearean tragedy turned upside down, inside out, and shaken vigorously. Minor characters take center stage as Rosencrantz and Guildenstern stumble through Hamlet, on their way to a fate Shakespeare has already written for them. Absurd comedy abounds as the pair of hapless heroes ponder the meaning of life (they don't figure it out), flip coins (it's always heads), and struggle to remember which one of them is which (they get it mostly right). Content warning: This play contains imagery of death and suicide, as well as blood. Written by Tom Stoppard. Directed by Devin E. Haqq. Cast: Jesse Cao Long, Pauline Lara, Juan Pablo Caceres, Peyton Turowski, Brandon Pineda-Bayudan, Britni Camacho, Mirza Haas, Ravyn Rochelle, Ronit Kathuria, Caden Sevier, Aaron Tyler, Ciro Saravia, Lance Brown, and Robert Bunn.

Concert | Orquesta Broadway Performs Latin Dance Tunes: Mambo, Pachanga, Salsa, & More (In Person AND Online!)

Latin band Orquesta Broadway performs a medley of dance music for the audience to enjoy. Formed in NYC in 1962, Orquesta Broadway emerged as one of the most important and enduring charanga ensembles in the U.S. At a time when Latin music was flourishing in the city, the group distinguished itself with the elegance, swing, and Cuban-rooted authenticity of its charanga format. Inspired by traditional Cuban charanga orchestras, founders Eddy and Rudy sought to preserve the spirit of danzon, cha-cha-cha, and pachanga while adapting them to the vibrant energy of New York's Latin music scene. The band quickly became a staple of the city's Latin dance circuit, performing in clubs like the Palladium and in dancehalls where mambo, pachanga, and Latin jazz were in high demand. For more than five decades, Orquesta Broadway has toured internationally, bringing charanga to Europe, Latin America, and beyond. Today, Orquesta Broadway stands as a living legacy of Cuban dance music in New York. The band continues to embody the vitality of charanga music and its unique place in Latin music history. There are three ways to access this event: 1. General Admission, first-come first-served. Just show up! 2. Fast Track opening the Monday before the event at noon. 3. The event will also be streamed live for free at the link provided.
