Other | Tatzu Nishi: Discovering Columbus: Visit the Famous Statue Up Close and 70 Feet in the Air

This major new artwork has been created by the Japanese artist Tatzu Nishi. The work places the 13-foot-tall statue of Columbus in the center of an American living room six stories above the city streets, recontextualizing the historical monument and temporarily transforming it into a contemporary artwork. The room will feature many of the trappings of a domestic living room—lamps, a couch, a coffee table, a television, and more—as well as custom wallpaper by the artist. Through large, loft-style windows, visitors will have dramatic views of Central Park and Midtown Manhattan that will be seen from Columbus’s perspective for the first time. Pass holders are asked to climb six flights of stairs to a height of 70 feet above street level and to descend by a second set of stairs. Flat, rubber-soled shoes are strongly recommended. This exhibition is ADA accessible. If a visitor requires the use of a mobility device (e.g. wheelchair, crutches, or a cane) or has a condition that prevents him or her from using the stairs, a hoist is available. Visitors under 13 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Those between the ages of 13 and 18 may visit without an adult, however a parent or guardian must obtain a pass for them. Given the physical demands of visiting the exhibition, it is not recommended for children under the age of 5. Strollers are not permitted.

City Walk | Midtown Manhattan Tour

Arguably the world's most valuable, busiest and most crowded pieces of real estate, Midtown Manhattan is what most visitors think of when they think of New York City. Home to some of the city's most iconic architecture, from Gothic to Post-Modern and from Beaux-Arts to Art Deco (lots of Art Deco). it's not difficult to understand why. But just behind the massive facades, lie facinating histories just waiting to be unveiled.

Lecture | Ukraine's New Language Law: European Integration or Back to the USSR?

A presentation by Dr. Volodymyr Kulyk, Head Research Fellow, Institute of Political and Ethnic Studies, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and 2012-2013 Petro Jacyk Distinguished Research Fellow in Ukrainian Studies at the Ukrainian Research Institute, Harvard University. The initiators of the new language law which was adopted in Ukraine a few months ago say they want their country to comply with the European norm of minority rights, including the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages. However, many provisions of the law not only give the Russian language preference over those of other minorities but also allow its use instead of Ukrainian in many regions and social domains. The first experiences of the implementation of the law confirm that the regime of President Yanukovych is paving the way for the return to the Soviet-like Russification.

City Walk | Lower East Side Food Tour

Where can you find a historic Synagogue next to a storefront Buddhist Temple, trendy boutiques that sit comfortably beside decades-old "Mom and Pop" shops, or tenament apartments interspersed between luxury high rise condos? Look no further than the Lower East Side to discover America's great Melting Pot. Once an insular slum with the one of the world's highest population densities and lowest life expectancies, its streets tell the tales of immigrant struggles and rags to riches stories. Known for a time as Kleindeutschland (Little Germany), this neighboorhood was also the Jewish ward, home today to a mix of foreign-born Latinos and Asians as well as students and hipsters. The result is one of New York City's most dynamic and interesting neighborhoods and a food lover's paradise.

Lecture | Is Lunch for Wimps? The History of the Midday Meal

The meal most often eaten in public, lunch has a long history of establishing social status and cementing alliances. From the Ploughman’s lunch in the field to the Power Lunch at the Four Seasons, where, with whom, and upon what we lunch marks our place in the world. Lunch has never been just a meal. The School Lunch Act of 1946, inspired by the malnutrition discovered by war-time recruiters, demonstrated that lunch could represent the very health of the nation. In the 1950s, the right to eat at one of America’s ubiquitous lunch counters came to represent America’s moral health. Issues of who cooks lunch, and who eats what and how and even when (before exercise or after?) in public institutions continues to galvanize activists. Historian Megan Elias, a writer in residence in the Library's Wertheim Study, is Associate Professor of history at CUNY’s Queensborough Community College and author of two previous books on American cultural history, Stir it Up: Home Economics in American Culture and Food in the United States, 1895-1940. She is also author of the forthcoming Taste of the Nation: American Cookbooks and Culture and co-author of the forthcoming, Barbecue: A Global History.

Discussion | Not Talking About A Revolution: The Internet in Post-Soviet Authoritarian States

A panel discussion with Sarah Kendzior, Washington University in Saint Louis, and Katy E. Pearce, University of Washington, with commentators Jack Snyder, Columbia University and Sarah Cook, Freedom House. The 2011 uprisings in the Middle East have prompted speculation as to whether digital technology can and will be used to foment similar uprisings in former Soviet authoritarian states. We argue that while the internet remains a critical tool for political expression in the region, its utility for activism is challenged by threats from the government, fear and political apathy among citizens, and social impediments to internet adoption, particularly along gender lines. In this presentation, we will discuss the latest data on who is using the internet in the region and for what purposes, and give case studies from Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan.

Opening Reception | 2 Solo Shows: Lisa Dinhofer / John Hrehov

Lisa Dinhofer's West Village Road Kill and Other Found Objects, the artist's fifth solo show at the gallery, showcases her new color pencil work that continues her realist style, deftly creating meticulous portraits of creatures; dragonflies, turtles, birds, bats and grasshoppers, that comprise her surrounding neighborhoods of SoHo and the West Village. John Hrehov's Shades from White to Black is his sixth solo show at the gallery. Hrehov's works evoke his continued interest in the theme of man coexisting with nature. Utilizing the artist's signature labor-intensive pointillist technique, Hrehov uses shades of white, black and gray, focusing specifically on urban settings - juxtaposing patterns onto the surface to represent elements of wind, rhythm and sound.

Talk | Obama, Neoliberalism, and the 2012 Election: Why We Want More than Same-Sex Marriage

With Cathy J. Cohen, Political Science, University of Chicago. On May 9, 2012, President Barack Obama announced his support for same-sex marriage. It was the first time a sitting president in the United States had made such a declaration. His new stance in support of same-sex marriage marked an evolution in President Obama’s position. The President’s new stand on same-sex marriage also re-ignited a debate or complaint heard repeatedly in black communities regarding the administration’s willingness to respond to other marginal communities, especially the gay and lesbian community, while largely ignoring the specific or targeted needs of black people, in particular those most vulnerable in black communities. In this talk Cohen will argue that the nature or character of the demands emanating from each community has played a significant role in the perceived accountability of the administration. Specifically, much of what the Obama administration has provided to other marginal communities, in particular the most visible policy wins of the gay and lesbian agenda, are policies and programs that are deeply rooted in and preserve the structural legitimacy and order of neoliberalism. These policies are markedly different from the type of policy interventions called for from many in black communities, interventions that challenge the logic of neoliberalsim and demand a significant shift in resources.

Opening Reception | Paintings: Aaron Nagel's Sovereign

Sovereign exemplifies Nagel's enduring admiration for classical oil painting, its medium and traditions, and employs them to create lush renderings of the female form. Along with his stringent adherence to technique and impeccable deftness of hand, a large part of Nagelʼs process is to seek out models and venues that communicate a distinct emotive reaction. Once selected, the inherent nature of the muse and how they interact with the location plays an important role with the ensuing compositions. For Sovereign, Nagel used a dilapidated yet inhabited townhouse painted and furnished in all black to assist in communicating a foreboding sense of self-imposed solitude.

Opening Reception | Photographs by Ryan Foerster

Ryan Foerster utilizes nature in a way that is unique when we consider the typical association of nature-related art. He does not paint epic landscapes from the tops of mountains or tack deerskin to the wall. Working mainly within the realm of photography, he does several things, either altogether or one at a time: he incorporates nature into his work, lets nature destroy/alter/improve his pictures, and creates the initial images from nature (as when he puts unexposed sheets of photo paper outside).

Lecture | The Varieties of Terrorism: A Contemporary Interrogation

With Efrain Lazos (UNAM, Mexico City/ MIT, Cambridge). Despite its evident and widespread presence in all societies, contemporary discourse about terrorism suffers from a fatal relativism that blocks serious public discussion. On the one hand, many are still convinced that state agents can never perform acts of terrorist violence―by definition, given that state agents have the monopoly of legitimate violence. On the other, agents portrayed as terrorists typically describe their violent acts as military actions, and consequently demand to be treated as combatants rather than as terrorists.

Contaminate NYC will present this experiential art show dedicated to London-based artist Jei Ryung Lee. Hollow is a photographic cinematic sequence that deals with the dichotomy between pureness and darkness in children's dreams as symbol of the difficulty and loneliness of growing up in an increasingly careless society. In her piece the sky at night becomes a potential playground where children are allowed to free their imagination in a way that is forbidden to adults, constrained in their status quo. The exhibition will feature a spatial installation simulating a time-lined environment to create an interactive and immersive experience for the viewer.

Author Reading | John Banville reads from his book Ancient Light

Alexander Cleave, an actor who thinks his best days are behind him, remembers his first unlikely affair as a teenage boy in a small town in 1950s Ireland: the illicit meetings in a rundown cottage outside town; assignations in the back of his lover's car on sunny mornings and rain-soaked afternoons. And with these early memories comes something sharper and much darker—the more recent collection of the actor's daughter's suicide ten years before.

Talk | John Tresch discusses his new book The Romantic Machine

"The Romantic Machine is a boldly original and riotously interdisciplinary essay in the history of science that reinterprets romanticism for our own era. Situated within a dense fabric of political, moral, aesthetic, and epistemological concerns, Tresch’s early nineteenth-century ‘mechanical romantics’ reject human mastery over nature as the goal of science, opting instead for limited regulation and sustainable coexistence.” - Jan Goldstein, University of Chicago

Lecture | The Heterodoxies of the Christian Archive

A talk by Jonathan Sheehan, UC Berkeley. In 1699, the radical and devout scholar Gottfried Arnold declared that the heart of Christianity beats not in orthodoxy, but in the bosom of heresy. This truth he uncovered in Christianity's own archives, and especially in the writings of the earliest of Church fathers. This paper explores the history and the consequences of the early modern discovery that, in fact, Christianity has never been as Christian as all that.
