Other | Tatzu Nishi: Discovering Columbus: Visit the Famous Statue Up Close and 70 Feet in the Air

This major new artwork has been created by the Japanese artist Tatzu Nishi. The work places the 13-foot-tall statue of Columbus in the center of an American living room six stories above the city streets, recontextualizing the historical monument and temporarily transforming it into a contemporary artwork. The room will feature many of the trappings of a domestic living room—lamps, a couch, a coffee table, a television, and more—as well as custom wallpaper by the artist. Through large, loft-style windows, visitors will have dramatic views of Central Park and Midtown Manhattan that will be seen from Columbus’s perspective for the first time. Pass holders are asked to climb six flights of stairs to a height of 70 feet above street level and to descend by a second set of stairs. Flat, rubber-soled shoes are strongly recommended. This exhibition is ADA accessible. If a visitor requires the use of a mobility device (e.g. wheelchair, crutches, or a cane) or has a condition that prevents him or her from using the stairs, a hoist is available. Visitors under 13 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Those between the ages of 13 and 18 may visit without an adult, however a parent or guardian must obtain a pass for them. Given the physical demands of visiting the exhibition, it is not recommended for children under the age of 5. Strollers are not permitted.

Dance Performance | Control Dominion, Choreography by Teresa Fellion

In Control Dominion, dancers in this cyborg society struggle between individual will and governing control. They explore opposing forces of surrender and domination, revealing harrowing pitfalls of the proselytizing hive mind. Frenetic, alert movement and intricate phrases in distorted style are programmed rather than organic. Inward rotations, tensile contractions, and reverberations pierce and manipulate bodies and space. Dynamic progressions of activity become chock full of manic activity as dancers fling, throw, jerk, jump, stiffen, fall, roll, lift, and engage sometimes beyond their capacity to control. Complex rhythmic sequences create gradations of synchronicity vs. presumed anarchy.

Symposium | Religious Exemptions, Sexual Freedom, and the Biopolitics of U.S. Healthcare

In the immediate aftermath of Roe v Wade and the legalization of abortion nation-wide, in 1973, the US Congress passed the first of what would become an expanding series of “religious exemptions” or “conscience clauses.” These exemptions allow providers of healthcare to refuse to permit otherwise legal medical services or procedures, because they violate the religious beliefs or “conscience” of the medical provider. In the intervening years, the range of issues covered by religious exemptions has expanded to include same-sex marriage and adoption by same-sex parents as well as the removal of feeding tubes and other end of life care issues. The frame for this one-day symposium is the broad array of constitutional, public policy, political, and ethical issues implicated in the practice of religious exemptions in both federal law and US states. The timing of the symposium – on the heels of the Supreme Court’s landmark decision on the affordable care act; in the midst of a general election campaign in which health care, reproductive rights, and same-sex marriage remain profoundly divisive issues; and just months before the 40th anniversary of Roe – makes this discussion all the more urgent.

The dangerous streets of Nanjing throw together a group of opposites, a flock of shell-shocked schoolchildren, a dozen seductive courtesans, and a renegade American posing as a priest to save his own skin, or so he thinks, all seeking safety behind a walled cathedral. Trapped by marauding soldiers, over the next few days the prejudices and divides between them will fall away as they unite around a last ditch plan to protect the children from impending catastrophe. 146 min. In Mandarin and English with subtitles.

City Walk | Greenwich Village Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Symposium | Practices of Biological Citizenship

A new kind of citizenship is taking shape in the age of biomedicine, biotechnology and genomics. With increased access to genetic tests applied to medicine, geneology, and crime, individuals can find themselves being excluded or included in communities, emerge with new identities, or form new communities based on genetic knowledge. This symposium seeks to provide a critical frame to the discussion of biological citizenship as it relates to neurodiversity, race, and health. Speakers include: Amy Harmon is a Pulitzer-prize winning correspondent for the New York Times. She won the Pulitzer in Explanatory Reporting in 2008 for the “DNA Age” series, which “explores the benefits and burdens of genetic information as it filters out of scientific laboratories into everyday life.” In 2007, she won the Newswomen’s Club Front Page Award for science reporting. Cindy Patton is Canada Research Chair in Community, Culture & Health and Professor of Anthropology and Sociology at Simon Fraser University. She is author of Globalizing AIDS, Fatal Advice: How Safe- Sex Education Went Wrong, Inventing AIDS, among others, and co-editor of Queer Diasporas. Harriet A. Washington is the author of Deadly Monopolies and Medical Apartheid, which won a National Book Critics Circle Award, the 2007 PEN Oakland Award, and the 2007 American Library Association Black Caucus Nonfiction Award. She has been a fellow in medical ethics at the Harvard Medical School, a senior research scholar at the National Center for Bioethics at Tuskegee University, a fellow at the Harvard School of Public Health, and the recipient of a John S. Knight Fellowship at Stanford University.

Tour | Chelsea & The High Line Sunset Tour

The area around the HighLine Park was a vital business district of New York City, supplying fresh fruits, French Cheeses and Russian caviar as well as fresh meats to City markets. The hustle and bustle of the streets induced the City to elevate the railroad trains delivering goods to the commercial buildings. When interstate truck traffic made the railway outdated, it fell into ruin, only to be regenerated as a park.

Gallery Talk | Guided Tour of Echoes of the Past: The Buddhist Cave Temples of Xiangtangshan

A major exhibition that explores the Buddhist cave temples of Xiangtangshan, the crowning cultural achievement of the sixth-century Northern Qi dynasty (550-77 CE). Carved into the mountains of northern China, the temples were once home to a magnificent array of sculptures—monumental Buddhas, divine attendant figures, and crouching monsters framed by floral motifs. These statues are among the finest embodiments of Chinese Buddhist sculpture and are seminal to our understanding of the history of Chinese Buddhist style and iconography.
