Other | Tatzu Nishi: Discovering Columbus: Visit the Famous Statue Up Close and 70 Feet in the Air

This major new artwork has been created by the Japanese artist Tatzu Nishi. The work places the 13-foot-tall statue of Columbus in the center of an American living room six stories above the city streets, recontextualizing the historical monument and temporarily transforming it into a contemporary artwork. The room will feature many of the trappings of a domestic living room—lamps, a couch, a coffee table, a television, and more—as well as custom wallpaper by the artist. Through large, loft-style windows, visitors will have dramatic views of Central Park and Midtown Manhattan that will be seen from Columbus’s perspective for the first time. Pass holders are asked to climb six flights of stairs to a height of 70 feet above street level and to descend by a second set of stairs. Flat, rubber-soled shoes are strongly recommended. This exhibition is ADA accessible. If a visitor requires the use of a mobility device (e.g. wheelchair, crutches, or a cane) or has a condition that prevents him or her from using the stairs, a hoist is available. Visitors under 13 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Those between the ages of 13 and 18 may visit without an adult, however a parent or guardian must obtain a pass for them. Given the physical demands of visiting the exhibition, it is not recommended for children under the age of 5. Strollers are not permitted.

City Walk | Greenwich Village Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Screening | One Day on Earth: Screening and Discussion

Film Screening and discussion with Executive Producer Brandon Litman A video time capsule of one day – 10 October 2010. More than 19,000 filmmakers, both professional and novice, contributed 3,000 hours of footage. The project, headed by Founder/Director Kyle Ruddick and Co-founder/Executive Producer Brandon Litman, donated video cameras to more than 95 UN country offices, which resulted in unusually intimate access, including footage of remote villages of Papua New Guinea and Abyei, a district of South Sudan with a history of border disputes. We see both the challenges and hopes of humanity from a diverse group of volunteer filmmakers assembled by a participatory media experiment. The film shows a world that is greatly interconnected, enormous, perilous, and wonderful.

Screening | German Documentary: Christoph Schlingensief's The African Twin Towers (2009)

Ten years after his previous film, Christoph Schlingensief wanted to give it another shot: the location of The African Twin Towers is Lüderitz in Namibia, the former German colony in West Africa. The script is about Richard Wagner, the 9/11 attacks, Hagen von Tronje, Herero tribe members dead and alive, ghosts of the past and of the present... It is abandoned on day two of the shooting. What follows are 27 days with Schlingensief at his artistic and image-generating best, gushing with ideas and concepts, attempting to find the right form of filmic expression after a decade in theatre, performance, and the visual arts. The African Twin Towers documents the full shooting period and includes actual footage of the never completed film, much of it shot by Schlingensief himself. Schlingensief's voice-over, recorded in Berlin three years later when he had already been diagnosed with cancer, tries to assimilate what really happened on those eventful 27 days that ultimately redefined his artistic vision.

Independent blogs, from Daily Kos to Nate Silver’s FiveThirtyEight.com, have created new forums for real-time news and expert insights into the arcana of the American political process. The emergence of powerful political voices in the world of new media has shifted the balance of reporting and interaction with the electorate away from the trinity of newspaper–radio–television. As media producers, the creators of political messages on the Internet, whether sponsored by established media outlets or driven by individuals or groups, now dominate social media traffic involving candidates and issues. TriviaTryst was founded in NYC in 2009 by Bryce Galen after realizing that pub quizzes were fun, but there was potential for a new type of trivia night with music, energy and popular appeal! With a talented team of dedicated hosts and weekly events in five states, TriviaTryst is taking the East Coast by storm. Bring your friends and come play! It's FREE, and teams of up to 6 people can win prizes of up to $50 in gift certificates!
