Other | Tatzu Nishi: Discovering Columbus: Visit the Famous Statue Up Close and 70 Feet in the Air

This major new artwork has been created by the Japanese artist Tatzu Nishi. The work places the 13-foot-tall statue of Columbus in the center of an American living room six stories above the city streets, recontextualizing the historical monument and temporarily transforming it into a contemporary artwork. The room will feature many of the trappings of a domestic living room—lamps, a couch, a coffee table, a television, and more—as well as custom wallpaper by the artist. Through large, loft-style windows, visitors will have dramatic views of Central Park and Midtown Manhattan that will be seen from Columbus’s perspective for the first time. Pass holders are asked to climb six flights of stairs to a height of 70 feet above street level and to descend by a second set of stairs. Flat, rubber-soled shoes are strongly recommended. This exhibition is ADA accessible. If a visitor requires the use of a mobility device (e.g. wheelchair, crutches, or a cane) or has a condition that prevents him or her from using the stairs, a hoist is available. Visitors under 13 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Those between the ages of 13 and 18 may visit without an adult, however a parent or guardian must obtain a pass for them. Given the physical demands of visiting the exhibition, it is not recommended for children under the age of 5. Strollers are not permitted.

City Walk | Lower East Side Food Tour

Where can you find a historic Synagogue next to a storefront Buddhist Temple, trendy boutiques that sit comfortably beside decades-old "Mom and Pop" shops, or tenament apartments interspersed between luxury high rise condos? Look no further than the Lower East Side to discover America's great Melting Pot. Once an insular slum with the one of the world's highest population densities and lowest life expectancies, its streets tell the tales of immigrant struggles and rags to riches stories. Known for a time as Kleindeutschland (Little Germany), this neighboorhood was also the Jewish ward, home today to a mix of foreign-born Latinos and Asians as well as students and hipsters. The result is one of New York City's most dynamic and interesting neighborhoods and a food lover's paradise.

Lecture | The Road to New Orleans Starts in 1752: Seven Years' War Roots in the War of 1812

Imperial disputes over territory, Native Americans fighting to retain their land, British redcoats and American backwoodsmen, Americans celebrating belonging to “a great empire.” These terms can all describe the War of 1812 as well as the Seven Years’ War (commonly called “the French and Indian War”), which raged from 1752 to 1765. Christian Ayne Crouch brings these two episodes together in order to trace commonalities between the conflicts over time and to suggest how the first war created both the alliances and the problems that exploded in 1812. The contest for “the west” and a struggle for survival between Indian Nations, Britain, Anglo-America, France, and Spain had not been resolved in 1763 – 1815 would attempt to answer this question for good.

Opening Reception | Jill Greenberg: Horse

In a subtle turn away from the more direct portraiture of her monkey and bear portraits, Jill Greenberg presents here a selection of photographs of horses. While the artist’s previous images of monkeys and bears proved extremely popular, she regards horses as her primal subject. As a young girl, Greenberg was preoccupied with horses for a time – - she drew them, painted, them, sculpted them, collected models, read about them, and got to ride them, too. Here she returns to her childhood interest, but with the more mature and knowing eye of an adult. The photographs reflect the majesty and power of these beasts, in addition to their undeniable sexuality.

Opening Reception | Life and Death, Including Little-Seen Work by Bill Viola

Curated by MFA Art Practice Department Chair David A. Ross, this exhibition includes new and seldom-seen classic works by Dara Birnbaum, Peter Campus, Frank Gillette and Bill Viola. Birnbaum’s 1983 "Damnation of Faust: revisits the eponymous 19th-century myth in a three-part series of modern-day contemplations on remembrance and loss. In Campus’s 1976 "Head of a Man with Death on His Mind," the subject stares at the camera in silence for 12 minutes. Gillette stages a faceoff in his 2012 work "Conjunction," made up of four identical monitors placed at right angles to each other: two display nature free of human intervention; the other two depict the man-made or synthetic. Viola’s 1992 "Heaven and Earth" consists of two exposed cathode ray tubes, one of which shows the artist’s grandmother on her deathbed, the other, the artist’s newborn son.

Workshop | Intro Class: Reiki System of Natural Healing

The Reiki System of Natural Healing was developed in the early 20th century by Mikao Usui, a Japanese Buddhist monk. The word “rei-ki” means “spiritual energy” or “transcendent life force” in Japanese, and the Reiki System was brought to the West over 80 years ago. Increasing acceptance and use in hospitals, hospices, spas and wellness centers has made the Reiki System one of the most in-demand healing modalities in the United States and around the world. The Reiki System (1) uses non-invasive, gentle touch; (2) accelerates the body’s natural healing processes; (3) supports mental and emotional healing; and (4) gives an overall sense of profound well-being.

Opening Reception | Paintings: William Villalongo's Sista Ancesta

In William Villalongo's world of myth and allegory, images of Abstract paintings represent radical Modernisms while the "colonial gaze" is ever present. In the artist's hands, these paintings appear as masks sported by a clan of exotic brown women. In many works the viewer peers covertly through a velvety-silhouette onto "tribal" scenes in which various attributes of Abstract painting find usefulness as raw material in the hands of these matriarchs. In this way, Villalongo explores a historiography of female exotica from Greek & Roman Myth and 18th Century nymph/harem scenes to Josephine Baker and Sheena comics.

Concert | Rock & Pop: Frankie Rose / U.S. Royalty / Big Scary

As a founding member, songwriter, instrumentalist and vocalist in Vivian Girls and drummer and occasional vocalist in Crystal Stilts, Frankie Rose has been an integral part of two of the most highly acclaimed and influential groups to come out of Brooklyn's still-vital music scene in the past several years. Rose's music is haunted by the ghosts of 60s girl group, Brill Building, and 80s and 90s noise pop in equal measure. U.S. Royalty formed in 2008 in Washington, D.C. Built around the lifelong musical collaboration of brothers John and Paul Thornley, vocals/piano and guitar, respectively, and rounded out by Jacob Michael (bass), and Luke Adams (drums), the group has refined and expanded their collective vision since their earliest practices spent shivering around a single heater while ensconced in an abandoned trailer in rural Maryland. Regularly lauded as one of Australia's brightest young bands, Big Scary has spent the past 18 months racking up the kind of success most musicians dream of. In the U.S., the band has seen high profile success with a national AT&T commercial and on multiple episodes of Grey's Anatomy.

Discussion | Remembering Jean-Michel Basquiat

The second of two panels which reminisce about the New Wave scene that filled the East Village and Lower East Side with astonishing art and music for a brief five years, 1978 to 1983, and brought two extraordinary young artists, Keith Haring and Jean-Michael Basquiat, into the limelight. Brooklyn-born Jean-Michel Basquiat began spray-painting graffiti art on New York City buildings at the age of 16. Within two years, the Village Voice had published an article about his street art and he had made the acquaintance of Andy Warhol and begun showing at the Annina Nosei Gallery in SoHo. While living in the East Village, Basquiat immersed himself in the downtown arts scene, including New Wave music, film and art. Close friends of Basquiat, his gallerist Annina Nosei and artist Al Diaz, look back at his life and work and discuss his continuing influence, with particular reference to his time in the Village.

Concert | Blue and White: Electric Shaman by VP Stage NY

‘Blue and White’ is Vong (a. k. a Vongku) Pak’s blending of traditional Korean and Western art forms. Vong believes traditional forms do not suddenly appear out of nowhere, rather they build up over time through a process of gathering a diverse range of influences to achieve its figure. The concept of ‘Blue and White’ comes from the ancient Asian philosophy of Yin and Yang , as well as the school of Five Elements. ‘Blue’ symbolizes Eastern culture whereas ‘White’ symbolizes Western. Since 2006, Vong’s Blue and White projects have been realized through the performances of 2 Sky Trio (2007), Book of changes (BAC Grant Awarded work, 2010), New Pansori(2011) and Wind From Asia (2012).

Discussion | Stealing, Borrowing and Reshaping in Contemporary Music

Composers have long combined personal inspiration and the influence of other artists’ works to create their own art. As technology provides the power to duplicate endlessly, how has this altered the creative process, defining a new aesthetic? Or has the creative impulse been stunted in favor of the easy remix? Composers and musicians Nico Muhly and Peter Ablinger, and music critic and writer Renaud Machart will discuss borrowing and re-shaping in today’s music. Muhly and Ablinger will perform a selection of works relevant to this question of heterogeneous identity. The panel will be moderated by Steve Smith, who is the music editor at Time Out New York.

Concert | Kiran Ahluwalia, Singer-Songwriter

Kiran Ahluwalia’s seductive voice draws on her Indian-Punjabi heritage for this free opening to the White Light Festival. Her original compositions and arrangements embody the spiritual essence of ghazal, an ancient form of poetry, influenced by Sufi mysticism, about illicit, unattainable love. Accompanied by traditional Indian percussion and contemporary Western instruments, Ahluwalia’s boundary-blurring songs invite us to explore the human condition, transcending the self by losing ourselves in love.
