Other | Tatzu Nishi: Discovering Columbus: Visit the Famous Statue Up Close and 70 Feet in the Air

This major new artwork has been created by the Japanese artist Tatzu Nishi. The work places the 13-foot-tall statue of Columbus in the center of an American living room six stories above the city streets, recontextualizing the historical monument and temporarily transforming it into a contemporary artwork. The room will feature many of the trappings of a domestic living room—lamps, a couch, a coffee table, a television, and more—as well as custom wallpaper by the artist. Through large, loft-style windows, visitors will have dramatic views of Central Park and Midtown Manhattan that will be seen from Columbus’s perspective for the first time. Pass holders are asked to climb six flights of stairs to a height of 70 feet above street level and to descend by a second set of stairs. Flat, rubber-soled shoes are strongly recommended. This exhibition is ADA accessible. If a visitor requires the use of a mobility device (e.g. wheelchair, crutches, or a cane) or has a condition that prevents him or her from using the stairs, a hoist is available. Visitors under 13 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Those between the ages of 13 and 18 may visit without an adult, however a parent or guardian must obtain a pass for them. Given the physical demands of visiting the exhibition, it is not recommended for children under the age of 5. Strollers are not permitted.

City Walk | Greenwich Village Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Lecture | Transnational Musicianship

Ingrid Kummels explores the contribution of Anacaona, a Cuban all-women jazz band founded in 1932, to the “son revolution” and the “jazz craze” of the 1930s and 1940s. By analyzing the attitudes and actions of individual band members and their international network of musicians, Professor Kummels uncovers the fascinating role Anacaona played in the transnationalization of jazz music, as well as the ways in which they helped shape its modern-day performance. Ingrid Kummels is professor of anthropology and director of the Latin American Institute at the Freie Universität in Berlin and the co-author of Queens of Havana: The Amazing Adventures of Anacaona, Cuba’s Legendary All-Girl Dance Band.

Lecture | Abject Agents in Global Cinema: The Cognitive-Corporal Mapping of Mind, Space and Capital

A lecture by Seung-hoon Jeong. In many contemporary films, ‘abject’ figures cast out of society symptomatically embody various modes of ‘bare life’ in the global age. Their suspended subjectivity is then restored as ‘agency,’ often in the role of an agent whose traumatically imposed mission is fulfilled through a double cognitive-corporal mapping: the temporal reconstruction of pathological mind/memory and the spatial reorientation of uncharted territory that is local, national, or global. This talk maps the new millennium cinema including global Hollywood (the Bourne series and the Dark Knight series) and alternative global cinema (Slumdog Millionaire, Memento, Babel, The Thieves…), while illuminating the new subjectivity as both a product and performer of cognitive capitalism and its catastrophic imagination.

Author Reading | A.J. Jacobs reads from his book Drop Dead Healthy: One Man's Humble Quest for Bodily Perfection

The senior Esquire editor and a writer known for experimental living, decides he will spend a year eating right and getting healthy. He subjected himself to a grueling but entertaining regimen of exercise, diets and experiments that yielded surprising insights. He assembled a team of expert medical advisers, pledged to disentangle medical myths from reality, and broke down his quest body part by body part. He tests our culture's assumptions and obsessions with what makes good health. Despite his success—a transformation the author proves with data and photographs—good health emerges as a means to a simple end: to be around to see his three young sons grow up.

Lecture | Modeling the Past

With Bernard Frischer. With generous funding from an anonymous donor and the National Science Foundation, and in close cooperation with the Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici del Lazio, an international team has been creating a restoration model of Hadrian's Villa, a World Heritage Site, and the best-preserved imperial villa in the hinterland of Rome. The model includes terrain, gardens, water features, sculpture, buildings, furnishings, and avatars representing members of the imperial court. The IDIA Lab at Ball State University, a partner in the project, has taken the 3D model and ported it to the game engine, Unity3D, so that it is possible to explore the reconstructed villa interactively over the Internet. Jazz | Vijay Iyer, Grammy-Nominated Pianist and Composer

Grammy-nominated, award-winning composer-pianist Vijay Iyer has been called one of “today’s most important pianists … extravagantly gifted … and brilliantly eclectic” by The New Yorker and “a boundless and deeply important young star” by the Los Angeles Times. Recently, Iyer was honored in five categories of the 2012 Down Beat International Critics Poll, including Jazz Artist of the Year, Jazz Album of the Year (for Accelerando), Jazz Group of the Year (for the Vijay Iyer Trio), Pianist of the Year, and Rising Star Composer. No other artist in the 60-year history of the magazine’s poll has ever taken five titles simultaneously.
