Discussion | A Conversation on Water with Susan Leal, Alex Prud'homme and Jesse Kornbluth

Everyone’s talking about carbon footprints these days, but when’s the last time you thought about your water footprint? Although alternatives are quickly being developed for fossil fuels, there is no alternative to fresh, clean water. Global demands on our finite water supply are increasing thanks to a booming population and changes in precipitation patterns brought on by climate change. There is an urgent need to develop innovative policies around water use and wastewater treatment, and there is surprisingly little being done to address these challenges. Join water utility expert and co-author of Running Out of Water, Susan Leal, and bestselling author Alex Prud’homme, who has a forthcoming book about water, for a lively discussion about what can – and should – be done to increase our long-term water security. The conversation will be moderated by journalist Jesse Kornbluth, frequent contributor to Vanity Fair, The New Yorker and The New York Times, who has edited the online cultural concierge service HeadButler.com since 2004.

Talk | Artist Josiah McElheny talks about his work

In this lecture, McElheny introduces two works, both titled "Island Universe" and both connected to an ongoing collaboration with astrophysicist David Weinberg of Ohio State University. One is a large-scale sculptural installation, and the other is a film shot on location at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. The visual depiction of time is at the core of McElheny's talk, but he also describes how he sees the history of science echoing the history of politics — in ways both sublime and absurd.

Lecture | Bronzino and Eleonora di Toledo: A Painter and His Patron

Over the past two decades, scholarly thought on the nature of the relationship between Bronzino and Eleonora di Toledo has been substantially revised. Initially thought of as solely the subject of one of the painter's best-known portraits and the recipient of what is perhaps his most outstanding surviving work, the Chapel of Eleonora in the Palazzo Vecchio, the Duchess of Florence has emerged in recent scholarship as one of Bronzino's most important and demanding patrons. Nonetheless, this relationship remains controversial and scholarly debate over it intense. In this talk, Bruce L. Edelstein will attempt to identify the most significant works documenting Eleonora's patronage of Bronzino and to characterize the nature of this particular patron-artist rapport.

Discussion | Reluctant Activists: Fundamentalism and LGBT Rights in East Africa

In the fall of 2009, an anti-homosexual bill was proposed in the Ugandan legislature. Itself a response to a presentation from American Christian fundamentalists, the bill sparked an international outcry as it targeted lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals for harassment, abuse, and even extermination. “Reluctant Activists: Fundamentalism and LGBT Rights in East Africa” highlights the experiences of LGBT in East Africa. Panelists will address how the push for anti-gay legislation throughout the region has been affected by increased activism at the local level and consider what these proposed initiatives mean for greater civil societies. They will also discuss how these initiatives are being incorporated into new legislation, the importance of homosexuality as an issue in upcoming elections throughout the region, and how advocacy organizations and activists can best respond. The panel is augmented by personal narratives from Kenyan and Tanzanian citizens. Other speakers include documentary filmmakers Malika Zouhali-Worrall and Katherine Fairfax Wright, the Reverend Patty Ackerman of the Unitarian Universalist Church, and Jesse Hawkes, executive director of Global Youth Connect.

Lecture | Selective Affinities

What laws of attraction are broken down by the notion of 'affinities'? What accounts for magnetism among beings, whether sexually or otherwise determined? The meaning of affinities is still indebted to Goethe's novel in the language of relationship and even dating. What remains is less a reference to chemistry than the idea of a secret and natural correspondence --a "resemblance"-- between people who are born to meet. The lecture is delivered by Francois Noudelmann, professor at the University of Paris VIII. He has written several books (on Sartre, Beckett) and he is involved both in literary theory and philosophy.
