Symposium | Treasures into Tractors: A Symposium on the Selling of Russia’s Cultural Heritage, 1918-1938

Unlike the widely publicized controversy surrounding Soviet and Nazi looting of art during World War II and its restitution, Soviet sales of masterpieces and other valuables during the interwar period have remained largely ignored outside a small community of scholars. Yet the Soviet government’s voluntary sales of Russian cultural heritage had far-reaching consequences for the international art market and perceptions of Russian art abroad. This symposium sheds new light on the artistic, legal, and economic impact of the interwar Soviet art sales, particularly as they affected the formation of museum and library collections in the United States. The symposium will conclude with a response by Mikhail B. Piotrovsky, Director of the Hermitage Museum.

Workshop | In Love with Opera

What do a classical Shakespearean play, a television soap opera, and the latest movie musical have in common with a classic grand opera? Answer: a love story. There’s no need for opera to be stuffy—dynamic artists will introduce you to the stories behind the songs so you can easily relate to them, regardless of the language being sung! What are the differences between a singer in a musical and a singer in an opera? How does a singer convey an emotion like love in two very different styles of music? Let exceptionally talented operatic performers show you how a love story comes to life in opera. Maestro Doug Martin leads soprano Oksana Krovytska and baritone Benjamin Davis in a touching and humorous workshop bringing to life the famous love stories of operatic theater for all ages.

Opening Reception | Installation: Matthew Buckingham's Likeness

An exhibition comprising two new film installations that examine the nature of portraiture. Successful portraits deliberately confuse the person they portray with an image of that person, producing a “likeness” which fulfills the proposition, “This is Ms. or Mr. X.” The two-dimensional surface of the painting generates and reflects a network of gazes: the subject of the portrait looks at the artist; the artist returns the sitter’s gaze; the painted portrait “stares” at the viewer; and finally the viewer returns the portrait’s “gaze.” Matthew Buckingham (b. 1963 in Nevada, Iowa) was recently the subject of an expansive survey at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid, organized by Lynne Cooke. He will have solo exhibitions in 2012 and 2013 at The Power Plant, Toronto, and Wiels Center for Contemporary Art, Brussels. Other recent solo exhibitions include the Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver (2009); Index, Stockholm (2008); the Hamburger Bahnhof - Museum fuer Gegenwart, Berlin (2007); and Camden Arts Centre, London (2007).
