Lecture | A New Regional Architecture in the Western Balkans

A lecture by Ambassador Valentin Inzko, the High Representative for Bosnia-Herzegovina. Inzko is an Austrian diplomat of Carinthian Slovene origin. When he took over that role in 2009 he stated: “I believe in partnership and I see myself as your partner, but I won't hesitate to use my powers if it proves to be necessary. That will not be my first choice, but rather the ultimate means which I won't hesitate to use." Inzko further promised to work closely with Bosnian politicians to help them solve existing problems, warning of the ever growing impact of the global crisis and stressing the need to respond to it with the right measures.

Opening Reception | Painting: Yana Dimitrova's And the Pursuit of Happiness

Bulgarian-born artist Dimitrova will be showing her recent works. The title of the exhibition is borrowed from the American patriotic phrase "Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness". Through the ironic play on words, the place and possible story of the work is revealed. Suggesting the idea of the American dream, Yana's paintings intend to question the validity and meaning of that statement, or where and what exactly is that happiness?

Talk | Artist Daphne Fitzpatrick talks about her work

Fitzpatrick’s work conflates a hobo sensibility with the care and attention of fine craftsmanship. Whether appropriated, foraged, or recreated, each of her works connects back to experiences within an ever-changing urban environment. Fitzpatrick combines appropriated images, found objects, photographs, sculpture, and video, building complex narratives littered with banal joke shop humor, sexual puns and perverse poetry. As Helen Molesworth wrote, Daphne Fitzpatrick is “reimagining…the commodity as a kind of Surrealist-inflected game piece…[she] uses the castoffs of spectacle culture to create delicate, Lilliputian tableaux inflected with visual puns”. Fitzpatrick has had recent solo exhibitions at Bellwether and La MaMa, NY. She has contributed work to the publications Artforum, North Drive Press and Interview Magazine.

Opening Reception | 2 Exhibitions: Jan Huling's Walking Under Ladders / Boom & Bust: Ceramic Commentary

Walking Under Ladders is a solo exhibition of new sculptural work by Jan Huling. Neither sketched nor planned, Huling's three-dimensional works draw inspiration from her travels to India and Mexico, as well as imagined, playful scenes reminiscent of childhood fairy tales and fantasies. In Boom & Bust: Ceramic Commentary, Sin-Ying Ho, Jeff Irwin, Jeffrey Mongrain and Robert Silverman are four ceramists commenting on the world's recent economic struggles brought about by America's dubious subprime lending and mortgage practices and questionable banking policies. Each artist makes overt references in their work about how they were personally affected by the world's financial market crash.

Opening Reception | Painting: Avner Ben Gal's: Smackville

Smackville draws from abstract and visual representations of the effects of opiate drugs: withdrawal, craving and usage. The show seeks to describe the moment of the chemical reaction when the toxic substance intrudes the body and is infused into the bloodstream. The works convey a will for redemption, rather than a need to be rehabilitated.

Opening Reception | Painting: Lisa Breslow's Urban Silences

A solo exhibition of oil-on-panel works. Breslow continues her quest to capture moments of quietude in the notoriously loud city she lives in. For years, she has visually explored New York's usually chaotic and buzzing urban landscape in its calmest state, namely during early morning hours or in the aftermath of a blizzard, for example. Breslow's search for tranquility has further led her to scenes of Central Park at dusk and most recently, to still life's that unfold in front of her own window, a symbolic barrier between the peaceful interior of her home and the hectic street life that waits on the other side.

Talk | Pragmatism and Indispensability Arguments

Cheryl Misak of the University of Toronto will present a paper entitled "Pragmatism and Indispensability Arguments." A mark of pragmatism is the indispensability argument: we need to believe p, therefore p. William James put forward the most notorious version of this argument, while others have been more plausible. Opening Reception | Prints: Christian Cravo's In the Gardens of Eden

Born from a Danish mother and his Brazilian father in 1974, Cravo was brought up in an artistic environment on the Brazilian port city of Salvador de Bahia. Son of a photographer and grandson of a sculptor, he was introduced into the art world from a very early age, though it was only at the age of 13 in Denmark, where he lived through out his adolescence, that he began to experiment with photographical techniques. He then returned to Brazil, where he got seriously involved with his camera. In 1993 he interrupted his photography research to do military service in Denmark. Once back in Brazil, Cravo managed to have his work recognized not only nationally but also internationally.

Lecture | “Everything is Dangerous” - A Case for the Pamphlet as Criticism

Kristina Lee Podesva, editor of the Vancouver-based art magazine Fillip, argues for the possibilities of the pamphlet as a new vehicle for criticism. Within the context of Fillip’s editorial vision and publication projects she will discuss the specificity of a new pamphlet series and the broader philosophy underlying the form and function of the pamphlet. She will explore its singular and peculiar form of impassioned criticism to initiate new conversations on contemporary art inspired by the spirit of nineteenth century propagandist pamphlets.

Discussion | New York, Nueva York

A conversation between Michael Wallace (Pulitzer Prize winning co-author of Gotham) and Arcadio Díaz Quiñones (Princeton University), moderated by James D. Fernández (NYU). In the early decades of the twentieth century, New York experienced a substantial influx of working-class immigrants from Spain. Compared to many other national groups from Europe, the Spanish colony in New York was relatively small. But the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 brought heightened visibility to New York’s Spaniards, as the city mobilized in response to the war in Spain.

Lecture | Intimacies Deferred: Genealogies of Freedom

Historians characterize the early nineteenth-century arrival of Chinese "coolies" to the Americas as "the transition from slavery to free labor," in which the abolition of slavery and the introduction of indentured labor comprised the conditions for the emergence of liberal political reason, connecting the rise of bourgeois political economic institutions in Europe and North America to plantations in the Atlantic and the Pacific. In this lecture, Lisa Lowe, Professor of Comparative Literature at the University of California, San Diego, will explore the 1840s-50s as a period of the ascendancy of "free trade," the rubric under which Britain and the U.S. sought to "open" Chinese ports, observing that the "coolie" not only figured a new division of labor, but became a sign of the shift from colonial mercantilism to a new international trade in manufactured goods.

Author Reading | Award-winning author Edwidge Danticat reads from her book Create Dangerously

In this deeply personal book, the celebrated Haitian-American writer reflects on art and exile, examining what it means to be an immigrant artist from a country in crisis. Inspired by Albert Camus' lecture "Create Dangerously," and combining memoir and essay, Danticat tells the stories of artists, including herself, who create despite, or because of, the horrors that drove them from their homelands and that continue to haunt them.

Dance Performance | Uptown/Downtown: Work-in-Progress Showing

What does it mean to be an Uptown or Downtown artist? Is the idea grounded in geography? Community? Aesthetics? How can we bring these artists and ideas together? A multidisciplinary group of artists — five who identify themselves, their work, or their artistic community to be “uptown” and five “downtown” – were brought together for six consecutive weekly sessions to develop works-in-progress through a non-directorial peer feedback process. Artists are acquainted with potentially new venues, professionals, and audiences by holding half of the sessions and showings in Harlem and half in Lower Manhattan. For two evenings, the 10 Uptown/Downtown artists will be showcasing works-in-progress they have been developing through this program to the public.
