Conference | Ambience in the Humanities

Sounds, voices, musics, images, written codes of all sorts – in today’s media-saturated environment, humans lend their ears and eyes to an abundant and seemingly free-floating worlds of social and sensory information. The intensity of this information calls for different models of poetics that figure the artist not as a lone fabricator constructing and reconstructing a singular tradition but rather as an antenna, receiving and rebroadcasting atmospheres of experience. The affects, concepts, and materials that create particular ambiences do not merely condition the work, as in the classic divide of text and context, but literally inform it, giving both materialand shape to the poetic process. From everyday life to extreme conditions of constraint, from suburbia to the warzone, how does the sensing self record—consciously or unconsciously—the ambience of these zones and spaces? This conference a series of roundtable discussions with writers, composers, performers, and critics that will consider not the influence of a particular tradition or canon but rather the influence of particular material surroundings.

Talk | Wittgenstein on Aesthetics, Mathematics, and Philosophical Method

Simo Säätelä of the University of Bergen will present a paper. In Wittgenstein's work we can find scattered remarks on philosophy and its methods. Perhaps the most famous of these is the comparison of methods in philosophy to different therapies (PI § 133). However, the attention given to this particular analogy threatens to lead to a one-sided view of Wittgenstein's conception of philosophy. This paper looks at another, frequently neglected analogy, occurring in two remarks from 1937 where Wittgenstein wants to draw attention to "the strange resemblance between a philosophical investigation (especially in mathematics) and an aesthetic one".

Concert | Free Music Friday: Hawke and Owl / John Schmitt / Friction Farm

John Dyer and Hilary Hawke are both songwriters and good friends who joined forces to create Hawke & Owl. Alongside the two are collaborators Mike Brown and Brian Geltner, who all shared the stage in various groups and projects leading up to the formation of Hawke & Owl. John Schmitt was born and raised in Buffalo and his songs are a direct reflection of his experiences growing up there. His simple, honest approach tells stories that hit at the heart of American life. Friction Farm is guitarist/vocalist Aidan Quinn and bassist/vocalist Christine Stay. With just two people and two instruments they create a lot of sound and a diverse repertoire; Quinn has a big jangly strum that’ll hypnotize your feet into tapping along, until he snaps you out of it with some intricate flat picking; Stay has a vocal intensity that is intimate and vulnerable in one song, powerful and angst ridden in the next.

Author Reading | Pietro Frassica discusses his book Her Maestro's Echo

Much has been written about Luigi Pirandello, the great artist and grandiose personality. His beloved actress, Marta Abba's side of the story, on the other hand, has never been adequately told. It's a tale that includes intriguing behind-the-scenes vignettes of the early history of filmmaking, including Pirandello's suspicions of Walt Disney; Marta's meeting with Mussolini a fan of hers and her candid impressions of him; Marta's marriage of convenience into the prominent Millikin family of Ohio; glimpses of an Italian media dynasty and its heavy-handed influence on the arts in general, and on Pirandello's legacy and Marta's career in particular. This book sketches out the story of a modern romance between an author and an actress, between an artist and his collaborating muse, between an older man and younger women. It also attempts to tackle the subject of Marta's sexuality an aspect of her life that has been little known until now. There will be a dramatic reading of selected Pirandello/Abba letters by actors Meghan Duffy and Ric Randig.
