Lecture | Current Cravings, Strange Desires, and Frightening Things: The Effect of the Frontal Lobe and Amygdala on Affect and Actions

Dr. Elisabeth Murray's laboratory studies the neural basis of learning, memory, emotion and action. One topic of particular interest is the neural bases of decision-making. What motivates us to make choices? How do our emotional responses lead to certain decisions over others? Examining the neural circuits critical for affective processing and the way in which affective information, including reward, guides decision-making, Dr. Murray will discuss her research in macaque monkeys, showing that the amygdala and a part of the frontal lobe—the orbital prefrontal cortex—operate as part of a network involved in reward-based decision making. These circuits contribute to emotional responses, preferences for foods, choice of objects associated with foods, and the valuation of choices based on a current biological state. In this talk, Dr. Murray will discuss the relationship between affective processing and choice of actions.

Lecture | Derrida's Queer Cat(s)

A lecture by Carla Freccero, University of California Santa Cruz. This talk situates some of the dilemmas of the effort to think and feel with non-human animate being in the western philosophical tradition by examining Jacques Derrida’s posthumous L’Animal que donc je suis (The Animal that Therefore I Am). Derrida’s work on animality is useful for crafting a queer ethics of relating to the living in general, even as his notion of spectrality offers a way to grapple with the traumatic persistence of (historical) affect in the present. Nevertheless, even as Derrida reaches toward a referent by insisting on the particularity and singularity of his (female) cat, what he animates is the lively density of intertextual feline figures in the history of literary and philosophical thinking and writing about questions of figure and reference and questions of inscription. In playfully allegorizing—even as he literalizes—the search for the elusive figure of the animal other as a mode of “chercher la femme,” Derrida subtly demonstrates the web of figural inter-implications (involving both sex and species difference) in efforts to meet and face animate alterity.

Dance Performance | Uptown/Downtown: Work-in-Progress Showing

What does it mean to be an Uptown or Downtown artist? Is the idea grounded in geography? Community? Aesthetics? How can we bring these artists and ideas together? A multidisciplinary group of artists — five who identify themselves, their work, or their artistic community to be “uptown” and five “downtown” – were brought together for six consecutive weekly sessions to develop works-in-progress through a non-directorial peer feedback process. Artists are acquainted with potentially new venues, professionals, and audiences by holding half of the sessions and showings in Harlem and half in Lower Manhattan. For two evenings, the 10 Uptown/Downtown artists will be showcasing works-in-progress they have been developing through this program to the public.
