Lecture | Collective Creativity

The current state of the left political spectrum feels devastated and broken. The current focus on identitarian politics from “progressives” often falls short of addressing the larger problems that arise from our positioning within capitalism. The intention of this series of lectures is to offer basic insights and an analysis of capitalism and the socialist alternative, and in particular the role and place of art within these two systems. Brujas’s constant public engagement with “identity” as women of color and as skateboarders has often been presented by external sources as a marketing piece, or as a spinoff from street culture and the economy surrounding it. Examples like this demonstrate that, for youth operating in the creative economy, it is essential to understand not only their relationship with their identities but also their entanglement with the larger economic and labor systems that play a significant (and often under-recognized) role in defining identities. The School of Politics reflects one of the Brujas’s primary goals: to spread political awareness as our society moves further away from democracy while power remains concentrated in the hands of the elite.

Author Reading | Leah Perry reads from her book The Cultural Politics of U.S. Immigration

Leah Perry argues that 1980s immigration discourse in law and popular media was a crucial ingredient in the cohesion of the neoliberal idea of democracy. Blending critical legal analysis with a feminist media studies methodology over a range of sources, Perry shows how even while “multicultural” immigrants were embraced, they were at the same time disciplined through gendered discourses of respectability. Examining the relationship between law and culture, this book weaves questions of legal status and gender into existing discussions about race and ethnicity to revise our understanding of both neoliberalism and immigration. Leah Perry is Assistant Professor of Cultural Studies at SUNY-Empire State College.

Opening Reception | Nona Faustine's My Country: Photographs

Building on her celebrated White Shoes series, here Faustine's performative monument-making style again tracks history and the power wielded by its perpetuated falsehoods versus its barely recognizable truth, but also boldly asks us to confront the very idealogical DNA of America. Since 2013 Faustine has gained national and international recognition for her photographic work that plays with historical narratives haunted by the black female body. She has used self-portraiture to re-mark locations in NYC where the history of slavery is literally buried physically and psychologically. The photographic documentation of her self-made monuments which avoid conventional readings of a cohesive national history work to expose the ongoing tragic legacy of slavery.

Discussion | Writing to Change Hearts and Minds

How can a writer best change the hearts and minds of readers when they believe strongly about a social or political issue, how do translators help adapt writers’ ideas for different cultures, and how does a book’s cover add meaning and impact to the message? Tonight, there will be a talk with two of guest writers from Europe: Mihkel Mutt, who employed satire in his novels as a means to talk about life under Communism in Estonia and later, after Independence, used more direct means in his essays and journalism; and Szczepan Twardoch, who takes a more philosophical and sociological approach as he writes along a line separating reality from fantasy, psychology from realism, to tell very human stories. Together they’ll be joined by acclaimed translator Alta L. Price, whose work on design-related texts like Jürgen Holstein’s The Book Cover in the Weimar Republic examines the critical role cover design plays in catching the reader’s attention and subverting expectations. Tonight’s conversation is moderated by acclaimed translator, Peter Constantine.

And how does the work of a painter, sculptor or visual artist influence the work of a writer? Concert | Lakecia Benjamin, Sultry Alto Saxophonist

Immersed in the vintage sounds of James Brown, Maceo Parker, Sly and the Family Stone, and the Meters, as well as straight-up jazz, saxophonist and composer Lakecia Benjamin's soaring, dance floor–friendly grooves take the classic vibe to a whole new level. With a pure jazz pedigree and experience playing alongside Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, The Roots, and Macy Gray, Benjamin whips up her own eclectic sound—swinging between smoldering late-night ambience, erudite jazz, and tight funk—where the guiding constant is her summery, sultry alto sax.

Discussion | New Literature from Europe Festival 2016: Coming of Age

Making an explosive entrance onto the Irish and UK literary scene with rave reviews in the Sunday Times and The Guardian, Colin Barrett’s book of short stories, Young Skins is set in the small rural town of Glanbeigh, a place whose fate took a downturn with the Celtic Tiger, a desolate spot where buffoonery and tension simmer and erupt, and booze-sodden boredom fills the corners of every pub and nightclub. Here and in the towns beyond, the young live hard and wear the scars. Tommy Wieringa’s Little Caesar is the story of a child’s faith despite parental betrayal and of the importance of self sacrifice, while his IMPAC Dublin Literary Award long-listed, Joe Speedboat, follows the inhabitants of a sleepy rural town of the fictional Lomark in the municipality of Westervelt in the Netherlands, and is a supersonic story of an unlikely alliance, and a fast dash to grow up. Don’t miss this conversation about friendship and youth, of families and their scars, and the portrayal of a very particular time in a young boy’s life, moderated by associate editor at Grove Atlantic, and publisher and editor in chief of Stonecutter Journal, Katie Raissian.

Discussion | Inventing Realities: Authors in Conversation

Authors invent worlds and people so vividly that we believe them to be real and true. They create imaginary characters and settings that are oftentimes easier to believe than what we watch on the evening news. Sometimes fiction is more believable than fact. Journalists, on the other hand, are relied upon to deal only in fact. Yet sometimes, authors step away from their imaginary worlds to become journalists who report on facts and real-life situations and characters or reversely, journalists give up the truth to write fiction. What happens in that process and can we really trust what an author writes when they’re being a journalist? Join award-winning BBC journalist, author and filmmaker, Michael Maher, along with Susana Moreira Marques, Asle Skredderberget, and Matei Visniec (pictured), as they consider whether an author makes a reliable journalist and, conversely, if a journalist can change gears to write a work of fiction?
