Conference | Brexit Before and Beyond

On June 23, 2016, a slim majority of the people of the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union by national referendum. The reasons that led to this historic vote, ending forty-three years of UK membership in the EU, are still being widely debated, as are the potential ramifications. This two-day event brings together journalists and scholars from European and American universities to uncover both the underlying issues that precipitated the UK's decision to separate from the EU as well as the ongoing fallout from the "Brexit" vote, especially for those of us working in global universities.

Talk | Overseas Trade and Family Sentiment among 18th-Century New York Jewish Merchants

This talk will ask how early New York Jews thought about and experienced family relationships, especially given the close connections among marriage, commercial activity, children's migration abroad, and the general fluidity of Jewish movement within North America, the Caribbean, and European commercial centers. Although relationships among spouses will be one focus, Professor Amanik is also particularly interested in how households of extended kin or the phenomenon of non-marriage among many Jews in British North America shaped family roles and ideals. The presentation will reflect on how temporary or long-term separation influenced interactions between parents and children, and especially among siblings. A sampling of New York Jewish merchant families will serve as case studies, including the Levy, Gomez, and Franks families. Speaker Allan Amanik received his PhD from New York University and is Assistant Professor of Judaic Studies at Brooklyn College, CUNY.

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all. Tours are Mondays and Fridays at 2pm, and Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10am.

Tour | Rockefeller Center Tour

Rockefeller Center is one of the most popular public spaces and tourist attractions in New York City. This depression-era commercial complex takes up over three full city blocks and is rich with history, public art, and art-deco architecture. Built by business mogul John D. Rockefeller Jr. with his own money, he instructed his team of designers and architects to build the most beautiful commercial complex of it’s kind in the world. That vision resulted in what is still one of NYC’s greatest treasures and gave rise to some of NYC’s favorite traditions including the Radio City Christmas Spectacular featuring the famous dance team the Rockettes and the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree.

Play | Truest: Black Comedy by Megan Cohen

Sam Shepard meets Thelma and Louise when we find two sisters in a kitchen. Smoking guns in hand, they’ve just slain the iconic brothers of fraternal drama True West. As these women chase their own uniquely twisted American Dream in a landscape of canonical corpses, they dance an intricate psychological duet that leads us through a surreal terrain of wonder, danger, laughter, and yearning. In this delightfully upsetting comic grapple by an emerging feminist playwright, we follow a pair of sisters on their brutal hunt in search of tenderness.

Workshop | Poetry Workshop: Writing from Fear

We all have topics we’re scared to write about, that we avoid at all costs. Too often these unwritten stories get in our way, taking up all of our oxygen and headspace. To be from a marginalized community is to be told our stories don’t matter—to be prompted to repress our fears and anxieties in the face of a society that does not care about us. How can we use poetry to explore our past, take control of our narratives, and insist that our stories matter too? In the supportive environment of this workshop, facilitator Henry Gonzalez will lead the group in looking at a few brave poems by writers we admire. We’ll ask what makes the poems brave, and what strategies the poets have used to face their fears. Then we’ll take some deep breaths and welcome terror into the room.

Talk | What's Next for America: Trump, the Economy and You

America has elected New York’s billionaire and real estate mogul Donald Trumpto the highest office of the nation. A strongly contested presidential election has given us a result, but it hasn’t answered all the questions still being asked by America’s voters. Trump did not have the government experience that his rival had. His media strategy was unconventional, to say the least, in a campaign plagued by gaffes. The lack of a so-called “ground game” organization to turn out the votes was compounded by his difficult relationship with the party elites. All this reinforced the view that he was not just another politician — yet none of it changed the outcome. Why? Speaker Andrew Mazzone of the Henry George School of Social Science will decipher the reasons behind Trump’s surprise victory and what it means for the economy and the direction of his presidency.

Gallery Talk | Artist Talk: Carolee Schneemann

Schneemann discusses her work with the art historian Soyoung Yoon, the essayist for the accompanying catalog to her exhibition. Entitled Exhibit C, the conversation pivots around the works on display, the critical but lesser-known installations and performances of the 1980’s, 90’s and the present. It emphasizes Schneemann’s continued engagement with the long, violent history of the struggle to control women’s bodies, from the contemporary witch hunt of the “war on cancer” to the daily duress of the “war on terror.”

Concert | Faculty Recital: Chiu-Chen Liu, viola

Liu’s works on paper extend from a blend of early Twentieth Century French references. They deploy a playful free-wandering quality of line that is as much borne from Matisse’s bold outlines and half-fi゙guration as it is from André Masson’s “automatic drawing.” Liu entertains the notion that her early morning drawings resonate with her dream-life, just as Masson suggested that the unpremeditated line is also drawn from the Freudian unconscious mind. Her works toy with a dance of color against line, and are dotted with moments in which watercolor wash bleeding across the page is offset by cosmic forms executed in gouache. Moreover, she allows her chosen media to shape the character of her imagery, as if to comment on the physical properties of watercolor, in which a sensuous, aquatic sensibility prevails.

Discussion | Rediscovering Swiss Writer Roger Lewinter

Join Lydia Davis and Rachel Careau as they discuss the literary work of Swiss writer Roger Lewinter, on the occasion of the publication of Story of Love in Solitude and The Attraction of Things with New Directions. Lewinter’s short fictional works are at once prose poems and a form of dreaming; they are akin to the great French tradition of things sparking emotions and emotions sparking things—part Sarraute, part Robbe-Grillet, part Perec. Plot is not really the point of his meditative works. Lewinter concerns himself more with perception, apperception, and sudden inflections of grace: loss and beauty meet in an explosion of joy, which becomes, “in its brilliance, a means of transmittal.”

Reading | Writers in Performance Showcase

Writers in Performance is a 12-week writing and performance workshop culminating in two public presentations. Throughout the course of the workshop, talented actors, playwrights, poets and storytellers have explored writing exercises, theater games, improvisation, movement techniques, and ensemble work in a safe, creative environment. This season, the theme and title of the Writers in Performance show is “Home.” Writers in Performance participants are diverse by design; not only in ethnicity, but by age, and experience as well, mixing professionals with students. The troupe will showcase the monologues and short scenes they have been crafting.

Opera | Barnum’s Bird: A 'Cabaret Opera' by Libby Larsen

Libby Larsen has amassed a catalogue of more than 500 works spanning every genre, from intimate vocal and chamber music to massive orchestral works and operas. Her music has been praised for its dynamic and vigorous American spirit, and nowhere is that more evident than in her “cabaret opera” Barnum’s Bird. Larsen’s compelling musical drama tells the tale of the “Swedish Nightingale,” celebrated soprano Jenny Lind, and world-class showman P.T. Barnam. It’s a reflection on artists and entertainers, on the competing desires to create work that touches the human soul and to produce a product that sells, a tension that threads its way through American culture to this day, where our favorite actors, athletes, and musicians are as likely to sell cars and soap as they are to practice their craft. The Barnard-Columbia Chamber Choir and soloists perform.
